I think as long as the Soviets were able to occupy the land and maintain a slight edge over the Muslims it would be a good thing [I would never want the Soviets to go home].  Muslims consider Afghanistan as part of "Dar al Islam" [house of Islam] and are psychologically incapable of ever being at rest with non-Muslims dwelling on that land w/o being under Muslim control; as long as infidels are in control of "Dar al Islam" land they will never stop waging jihad.  Thus, as long as the Soviets hold land anywhere Muslims consider Dar-al-Islam it will be a place where blood is shed.  As long as one side never won, and deaths were high on both sides... win-win.

How beautiful were the days when Afghanistan was under Soviets and both were firing all sorts of sorties and all types of salvos against each other incessantly. There was relatively peace on other parts of the world.

Jihad won because the US stepped in and taught them modern methods of criminal behavior.   Now jihad had a real arsenal and international capabilities.    The war I don't care if they all blow up together.   It's what came after that was the problem.
