Confront the hypocrisy

Op-ed: Israel’s treatment of Christians slammed, while far worse Muslim attitude is ignored

On New Year’s Eve there was a murderous attack on a Coptic Church in Alexandria, Egypt in which 23 Christians were killed and many dozens were wounded. Last week a Christian was shot on an Egyptian train and five others were wounded. The murders in Alexandria drew far more international interest than many other attacks on Copts in recent years. They also gained far more attention than other recent lethal attacks on Christians in countries such as Iraq, Pakistan or Nigeria.

One wonders whether this event might be a tipping point for the Western world. Are Western governments and Christians finally starting to interest themselves a bit more seriously regarding the fate of Christians in the Muslim world? If so, this took quite a long time. Back in 1994, Israeli Middle East expert Mordechai Abir had already summed up the Copts’ situation in one sentence: “Egypt has been unable to combat the hate of fundamentalist Muslims toward the Copts who are true remnants of the original Egyptian population.”

From 1992 to 1998, Islamic extremists in Egypt are thought to have killed well over a hundred Copts. Thereafter, the largest murder took place in 2000 when 20 Copts and one Muslim were killed after violence broke out in El-Kosheh, a town a few hundred kilometers south of Cairo. There were a number of attacks of Copts and much harassment in the following years. On 6 January 2010, after Christmas mass, three Muslim gunmen killed six Copts and a Muslim policeman in Nagaa Hammadi near the South-Egyptian town of Qena.

Besides being a possible turning point, the Alexandria murders raise many important issues which go beyond this major incident. Some of these are of special importance to Israel and the Jews. The attacks were followed by threats on an al-Qaeda connected website which indicated that Coptic churches in Europe would also be targeted. As a result, Coptic New Year services in various European countries had to be guarded. For decades, the only European religious services with a security system in place were at synagogues. Once again, Jews were the first targets while others followed later.

Several Western Protestant organizations have, over the past years, relentlessly criticized Israel’s attitude toward Palestinian Christians, while remaining silent about incomparably bigger problems caused them by Palestinian Muslims. The same bodies have also long ignored the harassment of Christians by Muslims in a large number of countries, including Egypt.

This motif of ignoring Muslim aggression and focusing on Jews is an ancient one. In 2005, historian Rivka Fishman published an article showing that from the Seventh Century, the Byzantines were threatened by Muslims. The Christian leaders, however, largely ignored this and instead focused their attention on hate mongering against the Jews.

Extreme double standards

To further illustrate the hypocrisy of various Christian bodies: The Open Doors organization recently published a ranking of countries in which Christians suffer the most from oppression. Communist North Korea headed the list. The eight countries following it are all Muslim ones. They include Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Maldives, Yemen, Iraq and Uzbekistan. In 10th place is communist Laos. The Palestinian Authority is in 45th place on the list. Israel does not appear on it.

Major international attention was given by many Protestant bodies to the 2009 anti-Israeli Kairos document published by a number of Palestinian Christians. Many of those who promoted it in the West were those who ignored the oppression of Christians by Muslims in the Palestinian territories and elsewhere in the Muslim world.

The double standards inherent in part of these Christian bodies are extreme. One of the organizations which behaved scandalously was the PKN, the umbrella body of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. After discussing the Kairos document, its leaders sent an accusing letter to the Israeli ambassador meant for the Israeli government. There are no indications that similar letters were ever sent to any ambassadors of the 50 countries on the Open Doors list.

Double standards toward Israel are at the heart of the new anti-Semitism. It is high time that Jewish and Israeli organizations as well as their many Christian friends expose strongly the many anti-Israeli Protestant bodies in Western countries. One prime target is the Geneva-based World Council of Churches which has almost consistently ignored oppression of Christians in Muslim lands, yet has given much negative attention to Israel.

Conservative Christians are being pegged as potential terrorists by the evil government in the USA. That's how strange things have gotten.

Pope Benedict Ratzinger Christians most persecuted minority in some countries                      http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/141781

Pope: Christians Replace Jews as ‘Most Persecuted Minority'

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Follow Israel news on Twitter and Facebook.

Jews, known for centuries as the most persecuted minority, have been replaced in this role by Christians, according to Pope Benedict XVI, who hinted that he was referring to the Islamic tidal wave that is sweeping the world.

Carefully avoiding singling out Muslims for the mistreatment of Christians, however, the pope recently appealed to European nations as well as the Muslim world to protect what he called the most persecuted religion in the world.

Recent attacks on Christians in Egypt, Nigeria and Iran have claimed dozens of casualties. The pope stated, "This succession of attacks is yet another sign of the urgent need for the governments of the region to adopt, in spite of difficulties and dangers, effective measures for the protection of religious minorities."

Iran has a different explanation for attacks on Christians. Ghazanfar Rokn-Abadi, its ambassador to Lebanon, said his country is a model for religious freedom and that “250,000 Christians are living in Iran peacefully and safely.” He blamed the Jews for any physical attacks.

Responding to the report on the pope’s statements, U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley declined to directly answer a reporter’s question, “Who do you think is doing this?”

“I’d be very wary at this point about making any sweeping statements about whether what’s happened in Iraq has a bearing on what’s happening in other countries such as Egypt or Nigeria,” Crowley said. “These are all being investigated.”

The International Christian Concern was more direct. ICC president Jeff King stated, "Anti-Christian hatred arising from Islam has flowed into 2011, as seen in the horrific attacks in Egypt, Pakistan and Iraq already this year," he said.

The ICC also noted that mainstream media rarely report the phenomenon of persecuted Christians despite its having becoming more common.

The most widespread persecution of Christians has been in the Middle East, where Israel is the only country that grants freedom to Muslims and Christians, as well as Jews, to freely practice their religion. Prior to the Six-Day War in 1967, when Jerusalem was reunited and Judea and Samaria were restored to Israel, Jordan's rulers closed all Jewish and Christian sites, except for high-profile official visits.

Christianity had been the dominant influence in Bethlehem until the first and second Arab intifadas, when Muslim rulers and clerics increasingly harassed Christians, forcing most of them to flee. The Palestinian Authority has blamed Israel for the Christian exodus, but research has documented the harrassment by Muslims.

In Egypt, the government did not take kindly to the pope’s call for "effective measures" to protect Christian minorities in the Middle East. Cairo recalled its ambassador to the Vatican, saying that "Egypt will not allow any non-Egyptian party to intervene in our internal affairs under any pretext.”

Despite witnesses saying that an off-duty Muslim policeman shouted “Allahu Akhbar´(Allah is great) as he shot and killed a Copt last week, Egypt claimed that the murderer acted because of “his personal state” and not because of “the religion of his victims.” The shooter aimed his pistol at women, presumed to be non-Muslims, who were not wearing a head covering.

Nevertheless, Egypt’s ambassador to the Vatican denied there was any persecution of Christians in his country. "Persecution is a big word," she said. "In order to prove that there is persecution, you have to be very careful. This is a legal term which should not be used casually.”

Western countries are in a state of denial, asserted Clifford D. May, president of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a policy institute focusing on terrorism.

Writing in the Boston Herald on Saturday, he cited the bombing of Christian churches in Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria and the Philippines and Indonesia, the recent arrests of Christians in Iran, and the death penalty handed down to a Christian woman in Pakistan for insulting Islam.

“The reality is this: Within the Muslim world today are regimes, movements and individuals convinced that their religion justifies - and benefits from - the most heinous atrocities,” May wrote. “They are determined, ruthless and lethal - as Christians and other minorities across a broad swath of the world have been finding out."

"If we in the West fail even to speak up for them, can we really expect moderate Muslims to do more?"

I think it was chutzpadik for the pope to make such a ridiculous statement. Jews have been persecuted in virtually every country we have existed in, and not just persecuted, we have been murdered and oppressed.... How can he even begin to compare the history of Christianity to the history of the Jews? What gives him the right to make such a pronouncement?

I don't want to start a war here... But I think the pope is off the hook...

Not sure how this topic got hijacked, but I think most of you know that I'm not a great fan of the current pontiff, in any way. Even this latest press release by him shows what a groveling dhimmi he is.

That being said, I think he is right when he says that Christians are "more persecuted" today on a global scale than Jews. There are vastly more Christians in the world than Jews so simply as a function of numbers, this is correct. Most of the countries that do the worst religious persecution have few or no Jews, and in any case Jews all over the world have the option of making aliyah. There is no similar Christian homeland or refuge anywhere. (Granted, the state of Israel persecutes Jews, but a lot of that is the fault of the Israeli sheeple for going along with it.)

Back to the original post, yimach schmo to the so-called "Christian" organizations that promote anti-Semitic blood libels against Israel for imaginary persecution while ignoring genocidal Muslim reichs.

I don't want to start a war here... But I think the pope is off the hook...

Righteous people are always persecuted by evil people. Don't forget that the Inquisition also targeted many, many Christians who were not following in perfect lock step with the will of the church. Hitler and Stalin killed many, many Christians too.

Personally I am not very fond of Ratzinger because for one he doesn't even see people like me as being able to go to heaven because ... I don't follow lock step with his belief system and happen to be non-denominational.

So yes he does have a lot of gall to say the things he says, considering how judgmental he is himself, and yet he seems Muslim-friendly, when Muslims are the worst most violent group in the world. He is just like his predecessor in this way.

Jews have always been persecuted because of what they symbolize. They symbolize to people that God is real. This sets off the reactions in evil people by the mere fact that Jews survive. Jewish people are living evidence that God exists and will judge people. When people strike out at the Jews, they are striking out at God by proxy. Don't let this get to your head.... I'm speaking in symbolic terms only.  :read:

Jews can do something about anti-Semitism today, which is make aliyah. Most of the time, Christians can do nothing about persecution.

That's the real difference.

The Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) is an apostate sodomite bathhouse in so many ways. They ordain fags, support abortion, and do not hold that the NT is the final authority for life (which is kind of the definition of Christianity).

One note--there are smaller breakaway branches of Presbyterianism that do not necessarily hold to what PCUSA teaches.
