Steve Cohen represents Tennessee's ninth congressional district, which mainly encompasses the city of Memphis. During recent debates leading up to the GOP passage of the healthcare repeal, Cohen compared the Republicans' concerns about ObamaCare to the tactics of infamous Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels.
"They say it's a government takeover of healthcare. [That's] a big lie -- just like Goebbels," Cohen argued. "You say it enough, you repeat the lie...and eventually, people believe it -- like 'blood libel.' That's the same kind of thing. The Germans said enough about the Jews...the people believed it, and you had the Holocaust."
But Rich Noyes, director of research at the Media Research Center (MRC), contends that "this is a terrible metaphor to use at any time. Others have gone there in the past, but they usually get pushed back pretty quickly. But to do that the week after we've had this national discussion about civility, I don't know what this congressman is thinking."
He believes the White House and the Democratic leadership in the House should chastise Cohen for his extreme rhetoric.
"They were very quick to condemn rhetoric as being somehow implicated in the Arizona shooting. Well, this is one of their own on the House floor using that kind of rhetoric," Noyes points out. "Do they think that somehow when Democrats use extreme name-calling against Republicans, it's okay -- and only Republicans need to be chastised? They need to sort of figure out what kind of double standards they have."
Meanwhile, Cohen's website laments his disappointment with the fact that his comments were used as a distraction from the healthcare debate.
