A total of 54 mortars exploded in the Sedot Hanegev, Eshkol and Sha'ar Hanegev regions of the western Negev on Saturday morning. Hamas' armed wing, the Izzadin Kassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for 10 of the mortars fired.
Two people were lightly injured from shrapnel as five of the shells landed in two of the area's communities.
Gaza-based Palestinian news sources reported that IDF tank shells hit the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning in response to the barrage of over 50 Palestinian mortars.
According to various Palestinian reports, the IDF struck targets in the southern and central Strip. No injuries were reported.
Israel Police sappers were attempting to dispose of the ordinance in the border areas.
Residents were asked to remain in protected rooms and weekend tourists were asked to leave the area.
On Friday, an additional ten mortar shells fired from Gaza hit the western Negev.
The projectiles landed in open areas, causing no casualties or damage.
In addition, an anti-tank missile was fired at IDF soldiers patrolling the security fence on the southern border with Gaza, Friday morning.
No injuries were reported and no damage was caused as a result.
