INDONESIAN police have arrested a TV cameraman who was hired by terrorists to film a planned church bombing.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said the man was arrested in Jakarta, bringing the total suspects held over the plot to 20.

“They wanted the blast to be broadcast internationally – as if television networks would like to broadcast it. But that was just their idea,” Amar said.

Anti-terror police defused five bombs placed around a church in Serpong, on the outskirts of Jakarta and said the attackers planned to activate them on Good Friday morning.

Police added that the group behind the bombs was a “new cell,” many of whose members had college degrees.

The same group recently sent out “book bombs” to several addresses, including those of liberal Muslim figures and a counterterrorism official, police said. No one was killed in those attacks.

Indonesia has been rocked by a series of attacks staged by regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah in recent years, including the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed 202 people.

More from the Jakarta Post:

The police’s antiterror detachment squad has arrested a Global TV cameraman, who police have identified only as IF, for alleged terrorism, a senior Global TV director has revealed.

The director said the cameraman was being detained at the National Police headquarters for questioning.

“We were initially informed by our source within the force that one of our cameramen had been detained on charges of terrorism,” Global TV news director Arya Sinulingga said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com Friday night.

Press council official Bekti Nugroho said the council intended  to summon Global TV management over the alleged involvement of  its cameraman in the latest terrorist plot.

He said the possibility of terrorists penetrating the media was a serious matter.

Sinulingga of Global TV said IF had worked solely in studio  as a cameraman for the past year and previously in the field for  Global’s celebrity gossip program for four years.

How about penetrating the Oval Office? Jakarta was Obama’s childhood home.
