Court President Ridicules Justice Minister's New Law
(IsraelNN.com) Israeli Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish ridiculed a law proposed by Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann by calling it “superfluous”. The law would place limits on the terms of court presidents and their deputies.
Such limits already exist for lower courts and, if extended to the High Court, would cap the president’s term at 7 years. Additionally, judges within 3 years of retirement would not be able to become president.
Beinish stated that she could not understand the purpose of such a law and that any change in the functioning of the High Court requires “profound discussion”.
