Just Had Blood Tests And Now I Feel Totally Wiped Out

This morning, I had to go for my yearly blood tests (usual stuff) without first eating.  The phlebotomist took five vials of blood from me.  I thought it would never stop.  Now I feel totally groggy, even though I ate quite a bit afterwards. 

For those of you in the medical field, what's the best thing to do to make yourselves feel better after giving blood.  (I feel like I may as well have given blood since it looked like lots of blood in those five vials.)

I've sometimes had bad feeling and weakness after similar blood tests but in my case it just goes away after an hour or so.

I just had some blood taken for tests yesterday too Lisa and I got a really bad headache afterward when I was at work last night. I don't know how I could have prevented that either. I hope you feel better!

Sorry to break this to you but, that should not do a thing to you. Its probably psychological.
When you give blood its a matter of pints and at the end they just give you a bottle of water.

Doughnuts orange juice cookies and a great streak dinner.

If you are anemic, take iron pills or multi vitamins.

Plenty of liquids preferably water with some electrolytes.

Five vials of blood seems like an awful lot for just a routine physical. Is anything else going on (you can answer that over PM)?

Your headache is most likely from hunger. Hunger headaches typically do not go away until your food is completely digested and all the calories and amino acids are properly distributed to all cells, and even then you might just have to sleep it off.

One headsup is that blood loss can be a hit to your immune system, both because it is stressful to your body and because you have just lost a bunch of leukocytes. When I gave blood, I got a bad cold shortly thereafter.

@YSTW -- Luckily, I didn't get a headache.  I just felt very tired and out of it.  I had no idea why the woman took five vials of blood out of me.  I thought it would never stop. 

@Dr. Dan -- I bought a small bottle of orange juice for the train ride to the city, but didn't finish it, since it tasted rancid.  I then came into the office, and had a coffee, which maybe I shouldn't have had.  On the other hand, I had a nectarine and about half a plum, which I think helped.

Fluids fluids fluids.  If any of these tests coincide with other things that result in blood loss, you may be feeling that.  It does make people 'woozy' to see 'all of that blood.'  Try some dilute gatorade.  Having a good meal will also help.

You should ask why five vials of blood were taken. Without anything to be looking for, even one would be unusual in this era of rampant cost-cutting in medicine.
