And a vast majority of orthodox Jews used to be anti-zionists...
The state of Israel was created and defended by secular Jews, many of whom were even socialists. Most orthodox Jews refused to go and settle the land. Today a substantial proportion of them still refuse to contribute to Israel's defence and Israel's economy. However, they play a vital role for Israel's future by having large numbers of children and raising them in a Jewish manner.
What I mean is that, from a historical and sociological point of view, zionism and orthodox Judaism have not always gone hand in hand, on the contrary... Zionism, in the twentieth century, was mostly a secular ideology imbued with European-style nationalism.
