Greatest Threat To Contemporary Relationships?
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:03:59 AM »
Self-explanatory. Please vote. I'm not voting. If I had to choose it would be  either "opposite day" thinking or selfishness because both encompass much of the rest of the above.

Any is the above, but chose brainwashing.  They have been the culture warriors of our time and have destroyed the institution of marriage

I agree. The NWO thinking pervades to every aspect of the lives of some people. An example is the way some people are uptight about "homophobia".

I think the brainwashing thing is indeed the most important. The statements of the mainstream media is becoming more and more absurd. There has to be shown always the next level of disfunctioning partnership. Normal adultery is today not exciting enough. And in addition the mainstream media tell us that we have to accept all the evil things as normal. And if it is too absurd to convince even the degenerated ones, then they even threaten with law inforcement.

I'm surprised nobody selected "bad selection priorities", you know men who only go for big boobs and women who only go for macho meatheads.

As soon as I selected this, I saw you saying this, lol.

The majority of the bad marriages Ive seen were from REALLY bad judgement; especially when the couple are under 30.  My uncle went for the big boobs and long blond hair, and now he is absolutely miserable.

Shallow girls if they're smart, would marry the wealthy guy and not necessarily a good looking one.  This is what I tend to notice in my part of the world.

You mean because they'll at least be able to get half of what he has?

I think it can be any combination of the things Axl listed.

Money is one of the biggest things couples fight over.  Interference from parents can also cause lots of problems.

That and live in a big house and a lifetime of shopping Gucci, Prada, and what have you.  On the other side of it, he can have all the mistresses he wants.

Actually, those types of marriages might work for a while since each person gets what he/she wants from the other.  The man wants eye candy to dangle on his arm.  And the woman wants the bling.  On the other hand though, the man can always trade in his current eye candy for a younger model.

Typical of the vast majority of political marriages.

A few honorable mentions that mostly fit into one or more of the categories I provided in the OP:

--Religious disagreements (nobody should intermarry at all, but of course people do anyway). Maybe this is not a relationship-killer at first, but it may be when kids come along and they each want to raise them under their own faith.
--Cultural differences if from different backgrounds (this really amplifies meddling by family and friends)
--Childbearing disagreements (i.e. woman wants kids, guy doesn't, etc., or disputes over type of contraception and whose responsibility it is)
--Child-raising disagreements (different parenting philosophies)
--Aesthetic disputes (i.e. woman insistent upon dieting, man wants wife to get plastic surgery, etc.)
--Political differences (these relationships never should have happened in the first place, but like religious intermarriage, it happens anyway)

I chose selfishness because many of the other options on your list can be related to that, including bad selection priorities.

Yes. Absolutely. That's why I said selfishness was one of my top two choices for myself.
