Depends on the circumstances. If a shvartza chaya comes and says it to you then it is certainly unfriendly.

Hard to say. It often comes off as condescending, though.

I know plenty of people who call me buddy in a friendly way. It all depends who it is coming from.

I agree hard to say, I mean I concider a lot of my friends my buddies but then again if someone tries to cut you off in traffic your term to them as buddy is not as friendly.

If someone calls you 'buddy its never good. Even by someone kidding around it is almost followed by something objectionable. I think the usage of the word has changed over the years to be less accepted. I think it might be  OK to use it to refer to someone but not so great when used to get a persons attention.

In Australia we use the term 'mate' like buddy or pal. The problem is when you call a foreigner that he thinks you want to breed with him and you're likely to get a smack in the mouth.

Usually if the person is a stranger or someone you don't know very well and he calls you a buddy it carries a negative meaning.  Obviously if a friend calls you buddy it has a friendly meaning but usually friends don't say "buddy" directly to each other.  Usually it's used to talk about friends when they're not around like "Yesterday my buddy and I saw some sand apes......"
"The Jews will eventually have to face up to what you're dealing with here.  The arabs will never love you for what good you've brought them.  They don't know how to really love.  But hate!  Oh, G-d, can they hate!  And they have a deep, deep, deep resentment because you have jolted them from their delusions of grandeur and shown them for what they are-a decadent, savage people controlled by a religion that has stripped them of all human ambition . . . except for the few cruel enough and arrogant enough to command them as one commands a mob of sheep.  You are dealing with a mad society and you'd better learn how to control it."

I wouldn't use the word with strangers because it sounds condescending, however I  still think it has it's use among acquaintances.

Depends on tone of voice, I'd generally think that it's either very friendly or very unfriendly, unlikely to be anywhere in between.

Yes sometimes it can be made to sound sarcastic but is used differently everywhere. I can imagine they use that word a lot in America, i haven't um....really ever heard anyone here use the term "buddy", except on TV.

It would depend on how well I know the person. Allen, before his grand exit from the site took the liberty of calling me his 'new best friend' all because I like the same 70's tv shows he liked... That's not what draws me to be friends, buddies, or even BEST friends with anyone. I still think he's a bit touched and needs some counceling; he's no friend of mine.

if someone from the east coast calls me buddy, I usually consider it an insult.

maybe it is, maybe it isn't but it sounds sorta patronizing.

Amm, freindly.....why not ?
