This is true. You can not blame them. If you ask somebody in his quality as member of a group you must be carefull, because your words will affect all members. It is different if you ask somebody in his quality as citizen. If they would have asked me in front of my assembly I would answered something indifferent too. Obama is the darling of the majority of Europeans. This you have to have in your mind. Otherwise it can have bad consequences.
