It's just as stupid to use Asian to refer exclusively to Orientals. Orientals are from East Asia. What about Jews from Southwest Asia and Indians from South Asia? I've seen people call Indians Asian but they do it as if they belong to the same race as Orientals. They think Asian can be used just like white is used to refer to Europeans and other places where whites are native to like the Middle East.

By the way, you can say the same for African regarding blacks. African originally referred to white Berbers in North Africa. Blacks should be called Sub-Saharan Africans. But if course they say Egypt and North Africa were always black.

Technically Pakistanis are Asian just like most people from India would be considered Asian because Pakistan and India are basically the same thing racially. However they don't generally look like East Asians that we usually associate that word with here in the USA. Asian is a really broad term that covers a lot of different types of people.
