What a frightening experience....they were just about to drain him of his blood,  and put the preservative in his veins!

I'm afraid that this is actually how a lot of people die. Perhaps not large numbers by year but significant enough that it's not completely a rare occurrence. Before embalming there were more cases of premature burial/people waking up in coffins alive and underground. That's why some people had a "wake" ceremony, to prevent that. At least exsanguination is better than that.
