Why does Manischewitz advertise Chillul Hashem Month?
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:31:44 PM »
"Jewish-American Heritage Month, UMM HMM!"

http://www.manischewitz.com/jahm.html

I added UMM HMM because it's an Obama invention. People say blacks invented things that they didn't. In this case, blacks did invent it. It's just a copy of Black History Month. Also, "Jewish-American" is a copy of "African-American". Just because blacks add American, why does everything else have to be qualified by the word American?

Binyamin,

You are mistaken if you think Obama started Jewish American Heritage month. It was signed into law by George W Bush in 2006...

Also I have no problem with it being called Jewish-American Heritage month because the purpose of it is not to hi-light Judaism or Jews in particular, but specifically the contributions Jews of America have made to American life...

America is supposed to be the melting pot of the world, and thus there are Indian-Americans, Chinese-Americans, French-Americans, etc.... It is not derogatory in the least...

Quote
Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) is an annual recognition and celebration of Jewish American achievements in and contributions to the United States of America. It is observed annually in the U.S. during the month of May.[1]

JAHM was set into law by President George W. Bush in 2006, according to the Jewish American Heritage Month Coalition. This is the achievement of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), as well as the Jewish Museum of Florida and the South Florida Jewish Community.[2] A similar month exists in Florida as Florida Jewish History Month but it occurs in January.[3]

.
.
.
Purpose

President George W. Bush announced that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month in April 2006. The announcement was an achievement in the effort of the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish Community leaders for a celebration of Jewish Americans and Jewish American Heritage.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) urged the president to proclaim a month that would recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to America and the American culture. The resolutions were passed unanimously, first in the United States House of Representatives in December 2005 and later in the United States Senate in February 2006.[4]

The Jewish American Heritage Month Coalition states that, "JAHM also enables the exploration of the meaning of religious pluralism, cultural diversity, and participation in American civic culture."[5]

According to Library of Congress hosted website, JewishHeritageMonth.gov, May was chosen as the month of Jewish American Heritage Month because of the successful 350th Anniversary Celebration of Jews in America.[6]

Im no 'wine connoisseur' or 'alcholic' or anything like that.

I think Maneshevitz is OK from time to time... I don't really like many wines, and at least Maneshevitz is sweet...

The one great Kosher wine I like is Rashi...

The Rabbi at my local progressive reform shul also happens to run a Kosher Wine tasting enterprise...

http://www.jweekly.com/article/full/40697/toasting-the-spirit-vallejo-rabbi-finds-heart-and-soulof-wine-drinking-in-n/

It doesn’t matter if you’re retelling the story of Passover, reciting the Kiddush on Friday night or celebrating a loved one’s bris. One thing’s for certain: there will be wine.

According to Rabbi David White, author of the new book “Sippin’ on Top of the World: Toasting Good Times and Better Days,” that comes as no coincidence.

“Wine is a catalyst to look for spiritual access points,” said White, the executive director of WineSpirit in Napa and spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Israel in Vallejo, in an interview. “You want to put your heart and soul into finding those moments, not just clink glasses.”

“Sippin’ on Top of the World” explores the meaning of life by making connections between spirituality and wine, grapes, vines and vineyards.

Each chapter features an insightful or inspirational passage, called a “sip,” which begins by asking the reader a question associated with wine, such as “How can wine calm your mind and open your spirit?” and “What is special about opening wine?”

White gives his take on each sip and, at the same time, invites the reader to weigh in too. There’s even a list of reflective questions at the end of each chapter to keep the conversation alive, and a place to write your own sip.

Of the 88 sips — originally a collection of 170 brief writings distributed as an e-mail series — White noted several of his favorites. They include Sip 65, which discusses how moments in the past enrich today’s present. White refers to the creation of Shabbat and introduction of the word “kadosh,” the Hebrew word for “holy,” to convey his message.

“The Creator’s directive is ‘Stop!’” White writes in the book. “And in doing so, access and enjoy life’s blessings. Stop and notice. Cherish what you have heard, seen and done.”

He also found Sip 73 (“How do you recharge spiritual batteries?”) to be particularly current, given that “people are so busy and need to accept sleep as a necessity,” he said. It was also the first sip he ever jotted down.

Sleep is just one method of rejuvenating human power, according to White. He also cites meditation, a vacation or retreat, a good book and coffee, or a relaxing meal with family and friends. That particular moment of renewal also can include a glass of wine.

“The ritual of raising a glass of wine indicates something special is under way,” White writes. “Such moments re-energize people, leaving them ready to go — and ready to stop again from time to time, to breathe in miracles of life.”

White was ordained a Conservative rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1975, and began work at his father Rabbi Saul White’s synagogue, Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco, as head of youth programming.

His desire to work with children and families led him to seek a pulpit of his own, and White landed at tiny Congregation Kol Shofar in Tiburon in 1977. At the time, the congregation consisted of only 45 families. By the time White left in 1991, that number had grown to over 200.

White, who served as part-time rabbi at Congregation Beth Sholom in Napa, and congregant David Freed partnered in 2001 to form WineSpirit, a nonprofit organization that examines the spiritual role of Napa Valley’s most famous product.

In addition to running WineSpirit, White leads bi-weekly men and women’s groups, which focus on life management in Napa.

Here is a site which has many good brands of Kosher wine:

Their wine is not made by them. They just use the name. Most people don't bother with their wine. That's about all the kosher wine they sell in the Bolshevik state owned liquor stores in Pennsylvania. I go to the private Jewish store to buy Rashi wine. Religious stores are exempt from the Bolshevik law outlawing private liquor stores plus there is no tax on wine in religious stores.

The wine in the state stores is too alcoholic. Rashi wine is less alcoholic and tastes better so it is ironic that the state stores actually encourage getting drunk even though they are official part of the "Liquor Control Board".

I like Rashi wine. Israeli wine and Israeli grape juice all don't taste good. It's also very hard to find Mevushal wine in Israel.

Magen David is only under Triangle K and not Mevushal. So most people that would buy it are not Halahically allowed to drink it because if they don't keep Shabbat, when they touch it, it becomes non-kosher. Of course Gentiles are allowed to drink it but if a Gentile or Non-Shomer Shabbat Jew would touch it, it becomes forbidden to Jews.

To most religious Jews, Manishewitz is best known for Passover food. I remember the orange labels when I was a kid. Most Passover food was made by them. Now there are many other companies and most of the Passover food I buy is not made by them. Also, Manischewitz is known for kosher food all year round.

To Non-Jews non-religious Jews, Manishewitz is the stereotype of kosher wine. It's like they think Hebrew National is the main kosher meat company. Most religious Jews don't eat Hebrew National. Most religious Jews  buy other wines but Manischewitz is permissible.

If you want to compare wine to Hebrew National, then compare Magen David wine with it.

Jewish-American is a Chillul Hashem word. The correct term is American Jews.

It's like there are street signs in Philadelphia saying "Jewish-American Museum" even though the museum it directs to is really the National Museum of American Jewish History. Most Jewish organizations avoid "Jewish-American". The museum I mentioned is probably affiliated with the Chillul Hashem month but at least they named the museum the correct name. I guess goyim named the month.

I would say American Asian Indians. American Indians are what people call Native Americans. Asian says that they are from the country India as opposed to American Indians. I might say Native American Indians.

Of course the correct terms for the others are American Chinese and American French.

Also, why do people have to say their American? If they go abroad they will tell people they are American. In the US, people know they are American.

If someone wants to differentiate between native born Americans and immigrants, they can say for example American-born Europeans as opposed to American European immigrants.

Also when someone says "Jewish-American", it encourages Jew to not be used as a noun. We are Jews first, Americans second. Regarding avoiding Jew as a noun, it's like when someone says "a Jewish person" instead of "a Jew" or "Jews".

The Jewish People means the Nation of Israel or Bnei Yisrael. There is no "Jewish person".

Jewish Heritage is a proper word. But there still should not be a Bolshevik month for it. There are 12 months of the year. If every group took one month, there wouldn't be enough months for it so some would have to share.

Plus blacks get February AND June (Black Music Month). We don't have to go down to their level. Jewish holidays also don't go by civil months. Every day is a Jewish day for us. We don't need a Bolshevik month.

There's a month for that? I find that very ironic since most African mainsream music is violent, to sexual for the public, and disgusting. If anything it has degraded our culture severely.

I don't think they do it for us, they do it for the non-Jews to appreciate the contribution of Jews to American life...

I don't really have a problem with that.. And I don't understand why anyone would...

I think that a vast majority of Americans are completely baffled by Jews. Many don't realize home much we have contributed to America and I think it is a good idea to have a month where these Jews are honored. The month is not for Jews to recognize their Jewishness, but rather for non-Jews to be educated about Jewish contribution.

The Rebbe's Birthday (11 Nissan) was declared by Congress to be the Noahide Law Day. They should make that day the day when goyim learn about Jews.

Education and Sharing Day

Observed by United States

Type

Date

2013 date
March 22

2014 date
April 11

Frequency

Education and Sharing Day is a day made by the United States Congress in honor of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994). It honors his efforts for education and sharing for Jews and non-Jews alike. During his lifetime the Rabbi opened scores of centers of education called "Chabad Houses". The day was inaugurated April 18, 1978, by President Jimmy Carter and has since been proclaimed, by the presiding President, annually on the Jewish birthday of Menachem Mendel Schneerson (11 Nissan), which generally falls out in April.[1]

President Ronald Reagan wrote in his proclamation of 1982:

One shining example for people of all faiths of what education ought to be is that provided by the Lubavitch movement, headed by Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, a worldwide spiritual leader who will celebrate his 80th birthday on April 4, 1982. The Lubavitcher Rebbe's work stands as a reminder that knowledge is an unworthy goal unless it is accompanied by moral and spiritual wisdom and understanding. He has provided a vivid example of the eternal validity of the Seven Noahide Laws, a moral code for all of us regardless of religious faith. May he go from strength to strength.

In recognition of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's 80th birthday, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States in Congress assembled have issued House Joint Resolution 447 to set aside April 4, 1982, as a "National Day of Reflection."

President George H. W. Bush wrote in his proclamation of 1989:

It is fitting that we honor Rabbi Schneerson and acknowledge his important contributions to society. Our great Nation takes just pride in its dedication to the principles of justice, equality, and truth. Americans also understand that we have a responsibility to inspire the same dedication in future generations. We owe a tremendous debt to Rabbi Schneerson and to all those who promote education that embraces moral and ethical values and emphasizes their importance.

In recognition of Rabbi Schneerson's vital efforts, and in celebration of his 87th birthday, the Congress, by House Joint Resolution 173, has designated April 16, 1989, and April 6, 1990, as "Education Day, U.S.A.

President Bill Clinton wrote in his proclamation of 1995:

"Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, well understood the importance of nurturing the heart along with the mind. Throughout his long and rich life, he believed that the education of our young people would only be successful if it sought to build character as well as intellect, if it taught the lessons of honesty, tolerance, and good citizenship, as well as language, math, and science.

This year, let us rededicate ourselves to teaching the love of learning that was championed by Rabbi Schneerson and is strengthened by caring leaders like him throughout our Nation. As we provide our students with the information and practical tools they need, let us also pass on to them the capacity for understanding that can help to give fuller meaning to their lives."

President George W. Bush wrote in his proclamation on Education and Sharing Day 2007:

"Education and Sharing Day honors the legacy of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and emphasizes our commitment to teach the next generation of Americans the values that make our country strong. The Lubavitcher Rabbi believed that society should 'make a new commitment to kindness,' and he helped to establish education and outreach centers offering social service programs and humanitarian aid around the world."

President Barack Obama wrote in his proclamation on Education & Sharing Day 2009:

"Few have better understood or more successfully promoted these ideas than Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who emphasized the importance of education and good character. Through the establishment of educational and social service institutions across the country and the world, Rabbi Schneerson sought to empower young people and inspire individuals of all ages. On this day, we raise his call anew."[2]

The 1991 bill described the Noahide Laws as the "ethical values and principles which are the basis of civilized society and upon which our great Nation was founded".[3]

President George W. Bush called upon "government officials, educators, volunteers, and all the people of the United States to reach out to young people and work to create a better, brighter, and more hopeful future for all."

My grandmother's Yahrzeit is 11 Nissan, 5751 (March 26, 1991). The year she died (1991), the bill described the Noahide Laws as the "ethical values and principles which are the basis of civilized society and upon which our great Nation was founded".

If they want to recognize a month, let them recognize Nissan. This year it coincides perfectly with April.

Chaim criticized the current "Jewish-American" month as being worse than Black History Month and Middle Eastern (Arab, not Jewish) History Month. He said that they only honor evil Jews.
