Israeli, Palestinian men seek family unification

Israeli man files application to Interior Ministry to be unified with married man from Tulkarm. Despite unusual nature of case, Interior Ministry promises to treat the application as all others

Roee Nahmias Published:  08.13.07, 21:27 / Israel News

Interior Ministry clerks recently received an unusual family unification request from an Israeli citizen wishing to unite with his male Palestinian lover from the West Bank city of Tulkarm.

The man, in his 50s resides in central Israel and wrote in his application that he only wishes to live with his life partner on weekdays, since the Palestinian, who is 20 years younger has to return to his wife and kids on the weekends.

The application was sent to a special committee which discusses humanitarian applications for granting a resident status to Palestinian partners of Israelis.

The Israeli described his relationship with his partner, who he said has supported him emotionally over the years.

The request is considered irregular since the basis for applying for partner status is while full relations exist between the two. In this case, it is only a partial relationship.

Nonetheless, the Interior Ministry stressed that the application would be treated as all other and would be examined thoroughly.

"This is not the first time we encounter an application that is slightly odder than the rest. Nonetheless, the application will be examined by the committee and a decision on the matter will be made," the Interior Ministry said.

Israel is on the same path of the US. However, in Israel, the Socialist/Communists are already in power..here, they aren't as much in power.

Weiss' colleagues denounce his statements

Bar Ilan professors publish petition strongly condemning Prof Weiss' statements against IDF officer and calling on police to investigate incident. 'Weiss' statements stand in contradiction to university's values,' petitioners say

Some 60 senior professors from Bar Ilan University signed a petition Monday calling for disciplinary measures to be taken against Professor Hillel Weiss who cursed an IDF officer during the evacuation of two families in Hebron last week.

Sincere Apology?

Prof Hillel Weiss apologizes for cursing Hebron Brigade commander in letter to IDF chief of staff, police commissioner, but later says apology was due to 'terrorist Mapainic pressure'. IDF reject apology citing lack of sincerity
Full Story

"The undersigned, faculty and research members at Bar Ilan, strongly reject the slanderous statements made by Prof Weiss against a senior IDF officer in particular, and against the State of Israel and its institutions, elected officials and representatives in general," the petition said.

"As university employees, we wholeheartedly reject the attitudes and opinions emanating from his words, which stand in stark contradiction to the principles of the university in particular, and those of Judaism and the State of Israel in general.

"We support freedom of speech as part of the democratic way of life, but oppose rampant verbal abuse. As academics, we believe that critical thinking is highly important, as is the willingness, even the duty, to criticize. But criticism, even it is expressed in the heat of passion, must remain within the boundaries of the legitimate."

'Weiss made crazy comments'

The petitioners also called on the law enforcement authorities to investigate the affair, and said they supported the university president's decision to hold a disciplinary hearing for Weiss.

The petition's initiator, Prof Aren Maeir, said that Weiss "made crazy comments against an IDF officer and the state's institutions. He wrote an apology letter and then said that the university president pressured him to do so and that the university was controlled by Mapainic terrorists. We don't accept this, but we don't have the right to demand his resignation, because there's due process."

The university's spokesperson said in response to Weiss' letter, "Prof Hillel Weiss did well by apologizing for his harsh statements; better late than never. Prof Weiss' letter will be brought before the Ne'eman committee, which has been appointed by the university president and will convene next week to discuss and decide on Weiss' case."

What was Chaim's response about whether Israel should have a "fairness doctrine"?
