Douglas McAuthur McCain was born in Illinois, grew up in Minnesota and died in Syria - alongside fellow Islamic terrorists.
McCain, an American citizen, died in clashes between two opposing Syrian terrorist groups over the weekend. The 33-year-old lived in California and was an aspiring rapper before he joined the Islamic State overseas, NBC News reported.
The Free Syrian Army confirmed McCain died in the fighting after opposing rebels found his American passport in his pocket.
McCain was born in Illinois, but grew up in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. He graduated from high school in New Hope, a Minneapolis suburb, in 1991.
"Doug was a fun guy to be around. Played basketball, joked a lot, had a small sense of humor. Got along with most," one unidentified classmate told NBC News.
He never seemed interested in religion, his buddy said.
When he started traveling the world while trying to launch a rap career, his religion became more obvious.
On one trip to Sweden, he met Kevin Törnström Kohlin, who told NBC News he had conversations with McCain about faith.
"He respected my Christianity," Kohlin told NBC News. "He was like a really nice guy. He smiles a lot and brings a lot of good energy."
While in Minnesota, McCain was arrested at least twice: Once in 2000 for disorderly conduct and once in 2006 for obstruction.
Eventually, McCain moved to San Diego. He attended a mosque in the area and worked at a Somali restaurant.
He began writing about his faith on his social media profiles. His Twitter bio read "Its Islam over everything," and a tweet from May explained he "reverted to Islam 10 years ago and I must say In sha Allah I will never look back the best thing that ever happen to me." On Facebook, he called himself "Duale ThaslaveofAllah."
That got the attention of radical militants overseas, it seemed. He began talking to ISIS fighters in Syria and other foreign rebels.
