QUESTION:

'Hurricane Joaquin' is set to possibly hit the American east coast on the last day of Sukkot (Hoshana Rabah)*.

How is that the name 'Juaquin' was chosen for the storm?

This is strange, because the name's origin is Hebrew, for Jehoiachin (Jeconiah). In Hebrew the name is written יהויכין - He was the last king of Judea before Zedekiah, who lost his reign, at the destruction of the kingdom by Babylon.

The name 'Joachim' or 'Jehoiachin' in Hebrew means "he whom G-d has set up" or "raised by God".

* The seventh (last) day of Sukkot is called Hoshana Rabbah, and is considered the final day of the divine “judgment” in which the fate of the new year is determined. It is the day when the verdict that was issued on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is finalized.

Stupid Americans say it "Wakin". It reminds me of "His name be Wakin. UMM HMM. Yeah, dat's a Muslim name.".

The real Spanish pronunciation is "Chu akin" or "Chwa kin". The Spanish J makes a Hebrew chet sound.

Not really. There has been ones like Hurricane Andrew, Jerry, Charley etc.

The hurricanes alternate between masculine and feminine names. One year the list starts with a female name and then the next year it starts with a male name. They used to have all female names but the feminists said it was sexist.

I fixed the title. But it seems idiotic the way some people call the name in English. If Yehoyakim is Jehoiakim, then logic would make Yehoyakin be Jehoiakin.
