Ban this, ban that. Puh-leez! If your faith is so insecure that you have to ban things to avoid doing them, Valentines Day is the least of your problems.  ::)

I'm not going to celebrate any of those pagan holidays. But in a monotheistic society, we should not be promoting paganism.

That is true. But reality learns that theocratic regimes only exist in some muslim countries right now.
Turkey must get out of NATO. NATO must get out of Kosovo-Serbia. Croats must get out of Crajina. All muslims must get out of Christian and Jewish land. Turks must get out of Cyprus. Turks must get out of "Istanbul". "Palestinians" must get out of Israel. Israel must become independent from USA.

According to many respected financial experts, Valentines's Day has now become a multi-billion dollar "industry"... So despite the fact that some of us (myself included) are of the opinion that it's not necessarily fair that no matter what faith you are, Valentine's Day and all the silly and satanic concepts that come with the day like that horrid demonic pagan little "cupid" character are going to be FORCED down your throat whether you like it or not, with all the money now involved with the day, short of locking yourself in a closet with a blindfold and ear plugs, there's really no way to avoid its yearly evil wrath.
Nobody forces you to spend money for this day.
In fact, making this day in a money-spending contest, is what we here in Europe call " Americanisation".
Showing that you have a lot of money on a day as this, is considered bad-taste, lower-class behaviour.
THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL MEANING OF THIS DAY, that's capitalism, without moral values.
Stop watching TV, listening to radio, watching advertisements in the streets.
In fact, the commercialisation of everything is the problem, not this or any other day itself.
This day was originally a tradition of West-European Royal courts.
Isn't that better, than behaving like a Taliban-criminal that exploits women as if they are animals?

The problem with the day is not the commercialization but rather its pagan origins with the pagan g-d Cupid, YM"S.

You don't live in a Jewish state.

We Europeans ARE pagans. Why don't you get it?
Our traditions are NOT solely based on Judaism.
It is more Greek, Roman and Slavic, Celtic or German, and that the USA is based on that tradition.

If you want to start an Inquisition to kill all pagans, be my guest.

I thought European are supposed to be Christians.

The United States is a Judeo-Christian country, not a pagan country. Why not the same for Europe?
I dsagree. The Western civilisation is build on Greek and Roman empires.
Christianity was incorporated, and played a major role from 600 till 1600 AD,
since then religion is a less determening factor in our everyday non-Jewish lifes than you assume.
Christianity in West-Europe is almost gone.

That's why Europe is becoming immoral. They lost all their morality. Now they are being punished with the Muslim invasion for being so Liberal.

You would think they would learn their lessons from Ancient Greece and Rome. Those empires ended up being immoral such as tolerating and promoting homosexuality and in the end G-d destroyed them.

The most immoral dreck in Europe is imported from Hollywood. So that argument does not make so much sense.

Today the USA are behaving like the Rome in the 4th century, and will fall even faster than the EU.

Another reason why Rome fell, is because it's army was already majority non-Roman.
Multi-culture destroyed those empires.
In the end all empires will fall anyway.

As a Christian, you should not celebrate Pre-Christian pagan holidays. I don't understand why Christians like to celebrate pagan holidays honoring Greek and Roman g-ds.

Valentine's Day, like Halloween and Groundhog's Day, is idolatry.

Christians are not Hebrews or Jews.

They are descendants of Romans/Greeks/Slavic-German people.

Traditions were held for centuries before Christiannity, are not possible to erase.
The Church tried to do that. And failed.

Valentines is harmless except for the pagan origin. But remember that Christmas also has a pagan origin and nobody cared about it last December. However personally, I find it more repulsive to celebrate a holiday which was related to a pagan human shaped idol like Cupid, than Christmas which honored a star (sun).

Why should it be banned for Jews. It can be celebrated among us, as long as it's celebrated by a husband and his wife.

Because it's a Christian holiday. It's the same reason Jews shouldn't celebrate Christmas.

all due respect, that cannot be made comparison yacov

as much as i hate valentines day, (for reasons i dont even need to mention) it is not a Christian festival the same way Christmas is...

one is celebrating the birth of the lord and savior for a religeon the other is celebrating the love and sweetheart for ones own.

Jews should do what they believe is the best to do as a Jew.

Same thing for Christians.

Nothing that does not cause harm to other people should be banned. If one's religion doesn't permit taking part in Valentines day, one shouldn't do it.

Christmas is a 'idolatrous' holiday as far as Noachides are concerned. Should it be banned?

People who celebrate Valentine's Day don't celebrate CUPID... we celbrate what the mythological figure represents. LOVE for your significant other. If that's a problem for you, I don't know what else to say.

Pagan gods represent only one thing: Idolatry which is forbidden to both Jews and Gentiles. I don't understand why Christians who believe in St. Valentine's Day don't focus more on St. Valentine and just drop the Cupid idolatry.

You have a problem, Yacov. Have you ever witnessed people celebrating Valentine's Day kneeling and worshipping Cupid? LOL And all of this time I thought they were celebrating love.  ::)

It doesn't matter what they are doing. It matters what the origin is. It's just like if a Jew would celebrate Christmas and say they aren't celebrating Jesus's birth, the true meaning of the holiday.

Yacov, stop setting rules for others. It does SO matter what they're doing. I don't care what the origin is... I love what it represents.

February 14th is in fact St. Valentines' Day. So the date itself has nothing to do with Cupid. That paganism is older, but was related with Valentines later.(As far as I know, pagans who worshipped Cupid didn't do it on February 14th)
Now, is it idolatry to celebrate a Catholic Saint's day? Catholic dogma does not teach to worshipp saints, only to remember their good deeds and follow their example. Just like Jews try to follow the great Rabbi's example and do mizvot. It's the people who sometimes put too much enphasis on the Saints and go so far as to nearly worshipping them, not the Church teachings. (I know it since my family is Catholic, and they don't worship the Saints).
However a Jew and a Noachide must remember that those Catholic saints did worship Jesus and cannot be taken as a model of perfection either, according to the Torah. But for Christians, it is ok. (Providing the focus on St. Valentin and love, not on Cupid)

You guys are religious right? Well, G-d gave us free will, free to do good, free to do bad, it's up to us, gave us that choice on DAY 1 as a matter of fact. Maybe the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden should have been banned.

So please, enough with the banning nonsense. That's what the damnable arabs do.
Nuke the arabs till they glow, then shoot them in the dark.

YES, ban Valentine's Day. It's a day of overpriced chocolate and flowers, and tons of upset single people.

We should not be promoting fascism either which is exactly what you do when you try to ban everything you don't like or agree with and when you try to dictate to others how they should live.

Oh, shut up!

Whats up?

Sorry, Skippy. I forgot that this was an old topic. I was just responding to the overall banning poll. These are getting ridiculous and fascistic. They might be a tad bit amusing if he wasn't serious about this. But he is, and that's extremely disturbing. I think I'm going to ask Chaim about this on the next Ask JTF, assuming that Yakov won't ban me from asking him about this.

Valentine's Day can be OK if taken in the proper concept. It most certainly isn't a religious holiday by any means.

Yacov: <<  I just don't understand why people celebrate things of pagan origin. Everyone here would be against celebrating things of Muslim origin so why should pagan things be any different?

It should only be celebrated by Christians as a religious Christian holiday without the pagan Cupid. Why do they forget the St. in St. Valentine's Day. It's just like they have Christian commercials around Christmas saying that Christians should put the Christ back in Christmas.

It's also similar to how Christians get drunk and have wild immodest parties for the Christian New Year rather than going to Church.>>

I understand your critique on this matter, Yacov.

But , study some more on the history of the Church - its early history around 200-300 AD,
the role it played around 1100 AD, the power it had untill 1950, and in what state it is now.

You will quickly find out that:

Catholicism, or even Protestantism in Western Europe , has lost its moral power over the people.
The morals are now being thaught by the liberal marxist mass media.

So you refer to these Christians ,  but in reality, most of them are atheists today.

It is actually rather irrelevant what the Churches say nowdays here,
as they hold less moral and earthly power, than the emerging mosques do.
