Airstrikes by a the U.S.coalition in Syria have killed Mohamed Emwazi, known as Jihadi John, the masked terrorist of the Islamic State who is considered their lead executioner, ABC News reports.

Jihadi John was the man with a British accent seen on ISIS videos killing journalist James Foley, among others. A U.S. official told the network that the jihadist was thought to be hit as he left a building in Raqqa, Syria, and entered a vehicle. The official called the hit “flawless” and a “clean hit” and that Emwazi was “evaporated.”

American forces began  airstrikes late Thursday targeting Emwazi, the Defense Department says.

Emwazi, 27, a British citizen who was born in Kuwait, has been shown in ISIS propaganda videos beheading American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff.

He has also executed U.S. aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, British service workers David Haines and Alan Henning, and Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, officials said.

Military officials said they were still assessing the operation and provided no further details, according to NBC.

Diane Foley, James Foley’s mother, told ABC News the terrorist’s death would be “really a small solace to us.”
