Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he can appeal to supporters of independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is making a strong challenge in the Democratic race, because they have similar views on trade

“We are getting horribly beaten in trade,” Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday on “Face the Nation.” “The difference is I will make great trade deals. He is not capable of doing it.”

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, acknowledges the United States is getting beaten by China and other countries in international trade, Trump said, “So in that way we are with the same.”

Trump said he believes a lot of Sanders’ supporters will end up voting for him in a general election, and that will put several states, including his home state of New York, into play that other Republicans don’t have a chance at.

“One of the reasons I win them, a lot of Democrats are going to cross over to me because they are tired of what is happening,” Trump said.
