Ego Tantrum: Trump won and is still whining about the popular vote and made-up voter fraud
Even former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, one of President Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters, is at a loss for why Trump continues to claim he did not win the popular vote only because some three to five million people voted illegally.
“I’m not sure why he brought it up,” Huckabee told Fox Business Network, stressing “I have no evidence whatsoever, and I don’t know that anyone does, that there are that many illegal people who voted. And frankly it doesn’t matter. He’s the president, and whether 20 million people voted, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
Trump told leaders on Capitol Hill on Monday he only lost the popular vote because so many illegals voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton, according to Politico, a claim he has made repeatedly since the election but which has no evidence to support it.
Other Republicans also joined in to criticize the president. One was House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said there was no evidence to support Trump’s claims, insisting he has “made that very, very clear,” BBC News reported.
Sen. Lindsey Graham issued a statement: “To continue to suggest that the 2016 election was conducted in a fashion that millions of people voted illegally undermines faith in our democracy,” The Hill reported. “It’s not coming from a candidate for the office, it’s coming from the man who holds the office. So, I am begging the president, share with us the information you have about this or please stop saying it.”
In apparent exasperation, Graham continued with his statement, saying “As a matter of fact, I’d like you do more than stop saying it. I’d like you to come forward and say, ‘Having looked at it, I am confident the election was fair and accurate and people who voted, voted legally.’ ‘Cause if he doesn’t do that, this is going to undermine his ability to govern this country.”
