1 critical, suspect dead in shooting at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston

A cardiologist at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s hospital is in critical condition Tuesday after he was shot twice by a gunman who police say fatally shot himself in a nearby exam room.

Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the gunman and victim but credited a swift response by police and hospital staffers to control the situation. The victim was rushed to the emergency room where he was treated for his life-threatening injuries.

Police located a deceased man who matched the suspect’s description in an exam room in the hospital’s Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Center. The suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and a gun was found next to the body.

The Boston police are taking the lead in the investigation and said that the situation is under control. Police said at a press conference that it appears that the suspect targeted this particular doctor.

“[The shooter] came into the hospital asking for this particular doctor,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said. “We don’t know why. That’s something we’re looking into.”

The Boston Globe reported that the hospital was under a Code Black, which means no additional patients were being accepted.

The scene was chaotic, according to one witness. The hospital made an announcement about a situation, without going into details, and told visitors to evacuate. The witness told MyFoxBoston that a few minutes later, the hospital urged them to “get out, get out.”

“We knew it wasn’t good,” he said.

Another witness told The Globe that the hospital made an announcement that there was a life-threatening emergency and individuals should go into a room and lock the doors.

Daniel F. Conley, the Suffolk district attorney, sent prosecutors to the center, The Globe reported.

Massachusetts State Police said they were assisting Boston police. The department said there are road closures in the area and drivers should expect delays and detours.
