Donald Trump is back to his worn out and deceptive “some [anonymous] people tell me that…” line to describe his flip-flop on amnesty, or in his own words in an interview with Sean Hannity this week, a “softening.”

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday evening, Donald Trump ventured out of his Trump-friendly FOX News safe space to address his recent flip-flop on amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

But before we get to that interview, let’s review what Trump told Sean Hannity less than 48 hours ago, where he explained his “softening” and came very close to describing illegal immigration as RINO pro-amnesty Jeb Bush, as “an act of love.”

Here’s Trump on Wednesday of this week explaining that his new position is not amnesty “as such,” (wink, wink) but then in regards to illegals, he’ll “work with them.”

“No citizenship. Let me go a step further. They’ll pay back-taxes — they have to pay taxes. There’s no amnesty, as such, there’s no amnesty, but we work with them. 

Now, everybody agrees we get the bad ones out. But when I go through and I meet thousands and thousands of people on this subject — and I’ve had very strong people come up to me, really great, great people come up to me, and they’ve said, ‘Mr. Trump, I love you, but to take a person who’s been here for 15 or 20 years [illegally] and throw them and their family out, it’s so tough, Mr. Trump.’

I have it all the time! It’s a very, very hard thing.” 

Trump’s new position is almost identical to that of amnesty squishes Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and many other former Republican presidential candidates, as well as the entire “Gang of Eight” amnesty proponents of 2013, where those here illegally would have to pay fines and taxes in a pathway to legalization.

But on Thursday evening, one day from his telling Hannity that his position on immigration is “softening,” he told Anderson Cooper that this softening is actually a “hardening.”

No, really.

And his evidence for this is Trump’s old standby, that “some people have said,” or “many people have told me,” or a variation of those weak arguments when articulating a position is unable to be verbalized.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. As with Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush learned, you’re not going to fool voters (except sycophantic Trump worshipers who accept every lie and flip-flop he performs with utter glee), with the “it’s not amnesty” deception.

When illegals are made legal, it’s amnesty, pure and simple. You can dress it up as “But, they’ll have to pay back taxes” and other such nonsense, but it’s still a form of amnesty.
