Passengers of carjacking attempt shaken

November 3, 2007 - 8:14AM

A violent attack on a car by a group of African men in Melbourne's inner city has left a young female driver and her male passenger distraught and shaken.

Joy Bennett, 21, who lives in Melbourne's outer east, said she felt terrified when about 10 African men surrounded the car as she waited to turn at a Carlton intersection about 6.45pm (AEDT) on Friday.

It was the first of two attacks at the corner of Rathdowne Street and Alexandra Parade in 10 minutes.

In the first attack, the group started kicking the vehicle, throwing bricks and punching passenger, Ms Bennett's housemate Josh Winnell, 24, through an open window.

"I was terrified," a tearful Ms Bennett told reporters in Melbourne.

"I had absolutely no idea what was happening. I didn't know what they wanted. This doesn't happen, not in real life," she said.

"When the guy was at my window with the brick I thought he was going to throw it through the window and get me as well, and I was scared they were going to get Josh out of the car.

"They were just pulling at him and trying to punch him."

Mr Winnell, the father of a three-week-old baby, said he was "pretty shaken" by the attack.

"I was just scared. I remember them trying to grab me and punch me and that was it. I was in shock. I just wanted to get out of there," he said.

The group had thrown a brick through the rear passenger window and another object through the rear windscreen.

A rock was recovered by police from a baby seat in the back of the car. Mr Winnell's baby was not in the car at the time.

Police have described the attack as random and brazen.

Detective Senior Constable James Midgley said the incident bore the marks of an attempted carjacking.

"It's a very random and brazen attack at a major intersection in peak hour," he said.

There was no evidence the group of African men was a gang, Det Sen Const Midgley said.

"There's nothing to indicate it's a gang. Carlton has a large African community and it appears to be a random attack," he said.

In the second attack, five minutes later at the same intersection, a man was told to get out of his car.

When he refused the group began to kick his car and tried to smash the drivers side window.

The man managed to drive off before any further damage was done.

This is another fine example on how multiculturalism does not work and will never work.

These animals need to be rounded up and shipped back to Africa, there plenty of room there and they can stay there  >:(

Countries with open immigration policies are making a big mistake letting in all the garbage of the world. A smaller upscale population is far better then a larger one containing all the scum of the earth.

Wow, in Carlton, somehow I didn't think it was the Italians who all live there that would do that. I remember a few years ago when one of those European soccer tournaments was going on, Italy played Croatia and the croatian monkeys decided that it would be fun to drive down Lygon Street ripping up Italian flags and basically abusing the Italians. The Italians didn't take it lightly! Croatians are such animals I would rather have these africans here than the croatians.

Somehow think its a start of something bigger. I wonder how long before they react to it. News travelled fast  up here. I got  a phonecall to look in the paper and that was before it was even printed.  ???

I don't get my information solely from the main stream media.

Quite the opposite. There only seems like there are too many because of their disproportionate numbers in the media, arts and academia.

Left, Labor Party MP in NSW Franka Arena was opposed to referenda on immigration as there were "too many rascists" according to her.

Australians fit neither extreme. The majority are just reasonably sensible. It has become obvious that black africans, arabs and muslims in general are bad for our country and do not fit in, so the majority are against those people comming here. It is also obvious that southern Europeans and Indians etc do fit in, so the majpority are not opposed to them.

I think if their lives depended on it they would make more of a choice than the British for example.

20 years ago, Australia was just as self-hating and guilt ridden as Europe was then.

Luckily 10 years ago Pauleen Hanson came along, made nationalism and the fierce protection of our way of life popular again, then John Howard had to steal her policies to steal back his voters. It is now mainstream to say "if these bloody foreigners don't like it, they can p*ss off!" That was not the case 20 years back.

If not for pauline Hanson/ John Howard we could have gone down the same road as Europe/Canada.

He could of at anytime change policies he encourged it.

He supported the Mullahs having a politicial party. Oh yes how great Johnny the fruitcake Howard is.

And take a good look we are not that far off it.

He's still a big improvement on the "we're all emberrassed about being white" Hawk/Keating gov't.

At least Howard has said..... "Being tollerant of other cultures or religions does not mean appologising for your own".

And Costello..."Australia will NEVER be an islamic country and NEVER have sharia law. If some members of the community find that unacceptable they should live elsewhere".

I'm a Trade Unionist and hate his fascist, IR laws, BTW. But credit where credit is due.

I am a Unionist too, and I stop supporting crap when it starts to stink, where my lovely lots climbed into bed with the commies  :-\.

Labour is sucked up with the Greens *cough*reds*cough*, Liberal is gone to hell. I don't see anything good in any of the major parties at all.

I agree. It's a choice between global, multinational, fascist, low-wage slavery, puppet government via the Liberal Party........

Or lefty, greenie, self-hating, immigrant-flooded destruction via the labor Party.

Hardly anyone would vote for him, most people in the country see him as nothing more than a religious whacko, even though he is spot on about muslim immigration. I'd take the liberal "fascists" ahead of the socialist, lefty, green loving, arab loving labor scum any day of the week.
