The Theory of “White Privilege”
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:53:12 AM »
I had to write this for Politics of Diversity class so it had to be "politically correct". I only put my own opinion in at the end.

Peggy McIntosh, “an American feminist and anti-racist activist”,   is author of a controversial 1988 piece entitled "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences through Work in Women’s Studies.",   also known by its shorter form, "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”.   She claims that white privilege is “an invisible package of unearned asserts” that whites “can count on cashing in each day”. She says that it’s “like an invisible knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks”. This alludes to the things that whites take for granted that blacks don’t always get.

According to Wikipedia, “White privilege is a sociological concept describing the advantages enjoyed by white persons beyond what is commonly experienced by the non-white people in those same social spaces (nation, community, workplace, etc.). It differs from racism or prejudice by the fact that a person benefiting from white privilege need not hold racist beliefs themselves.   Some scholars claim that whiteness is a “property”. Critical race theorists “Cheryl Harris and George Lipshitz say [whiteness] is something of value owned by certain members of society”.   According to Betsy Lucal, “current ideas about racism are limited because of their tendency to focus only on racial ‘minorities’ and the oppressive aspects of race, overlooking how whites are affected by race and indeed receive privileges through race”.   Whites have trouble learning about the concept of white privilege because they don’t live with the consequences of not having it. According to Dan J. Pence and J. Arthur Fields, “resistance to acknowledging white privilege stems from the fact that whites often see inequality as a black or Latino issue”  . The whites don’t realize that they benefit in life from being white, simply by being white.

Examples of white privilege include that whites may be treated in a certain positive way and not realize that blacks don’t get treated in that way. Blacks may be denied certain things in life because whites are afraid to deal with them. Professor Clyburn has said that he was left to bleed nearly to death because medical workers were afraid to treat him because they thought black blood is infected and were afraid of catching blood-borne diseases. Another example is that white couples don’t get stared at when they walk in public but interracial couples such as Professor Clyburn and his white wife do get stared at when they walk in public. Whites take these things for granted because they don’t have to deal with it.

Wikipedia cites additional examples of white privileges. One of these example is in the justice system. According to Wikipedia, “black Hispanic males are three times more likely than white males to have their vehicles stopped and searched by police”.   This is because of the stereotype that blacks and Hispanics are more likely to commit crimes than whites. Wikipedia also states that whites are likely to lighter punishments than minorities when convicted of crimes in the American justice system. The article cites the statistic that “Black youth arrested for drug possession for the first time are incarcerated at a rate that is forty-eight times greater than the rate for white youth, even when all other factors surrounding the crime are identical.”.

The critics of white privilege say that blacks are privileged to certain things that whites are not. They cite affirmative action as an example. They also say that blacks get jobs just because they’re black and can get away with doing things that whites can’t because the whites fear being labeled racist. Some even cite the fact that poor blacks get welfare as black privilege. Some whites say that the age of political correctness gives blacks privileges that whites don’t have.

All in all, there are probably some truths to both sides of the argument. Whites may be treated better by their fellow whites than blacks are treated by whites. At the same time, blacks are treated better by whites in terms of being politically correct and in reverse discrimination.

Brother Yacov,

I sure hope you're not actually paying good money spending time being brainwashed with that trash!

You could join any carnival or road circus for six months, get them to pay you for it, and learn more in six months about life and everything there is to know about it, than you will ever learn studying that Marxist-neo-feminist garbage.

Same goes for just joining the IDF or U.S. Army.

Forgive my "butting in to your personal business", I really don't mean this as implying anything wrong on your part.  It's the sad state of academia which I am criticizing.

Sounds like the dreck DR. LARRY LESLIE of the University Of South Florida told me when he refused to admit me to his program in 1990. I was "privileged and advantaged" (his own words). Of course the fact that he;s a convert to islam couldn't have anything to do with it, could it?

No, it's not Penn State. I'm in one of the universities in the state university system. Penn State is its own system and is more expensive than the state university system. Penn State is statewide and has different branches locally but I'm in a university that only has two campuses, both within a mile of each other. It's an hour West of Philadelphia.

Dear Yacov, when you come right down to it anything you say to a darkie that makes any sense or that is completely over their heads that deem as racist. Since you are using words they can't and never will be able to understand they take the attitude that you are 'disrepectim tem'.

Sometimes I make comments in class that are Right Wing but I don't say anything that would sound racist against blacks or other minorities. But I do say that The Koran commands Muslims to murder all Non-Muslims and I do criticize Arabs and Muslims and I say things in favor of Israel.

If I'm talking to Jews such as in synagogue, I'd talk the same as I do on the forum.

So actually it is too dangerous to talk freely....

Were you marked down for using Wikipedia? It is a very poor thing to refer to in any essay or piece of written work.

I got this from my Diversity teacher.

You received a B- on your final examination.  Your previous exam scores were a C and a B-.  Exams constitute 60% of your final grade in the class.  Given that students were provided with the questions one week in advance, I was rather disappointed in some of the exam results. Thankfully, I am exceptionally merciful grader (perhaps too much so), and my students generally receive more favorable marks than they would in other courses.  Many of the papers submitted in this class (including one of yours) warranted a failing grade.  Spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, poor punctation, undocumented sources, utterly ludicrous and unsubstantiated arguments, etc., are problems that many professors would not tolerate.  But rather than dole out Fs, I opted to be as forgiving and patient as possible.  In other words, your final grade and those of many other students in the class COULD have been SIGNIFICANTLY worse.  The B- (2.67) you received is relatively consistent with your current GPA (2.760).  Feel fortunate, Yacov. If you want to improve your performance in future classes, I would urge you to (a) elaborate more on essay exams, (b) strive to be as objective as possible, (c) develop your writing skills further and (d) be prompt (you had a penchant for arriving to class very late throughout the semester - and this takes a toll over time in terms of missed lecture material). Moreover, it is imperative that students have a clear understanding of the instructor's expectations  (i.e., when you have the questions one week in advance, the prof expects you to write more than a few paragraphs).

I look forward to seeing you in future classes, Yacov. Take care.

Thank G-d we did not have Diversity teacher's when I was in school is all I can say. You did better in that class than I would have. Thats some note the teacher sent you. There is a hidden agenda in his actions. If he was being merciful in his grades he was only being merciful to himself because if to many people were to fail that cr-p class they would have to reevaluate what they or he were doing. This is a form of indoctrination that is highly destructive to our country and makes people into lemmings. I can see over the years how the human resource people in the work place have changed because of classes like this. They now come into the work place with crazy ideas about how people should interact and cause nothing but problems where none exist. Thank G-d you have seen the other side of the coin and are sharp enough to see that most of what they teach in that class is garbage. Many people are not as lucky and come out of classes like that a clone of the evil animal that was teaching it.

The class that you were 'forced' to take is as worthless as its worthless 'professor'. What a waste of a salary to pay this idiot. He could be serving humanity better by cleaning tables at burger king.

Yacov,

There is nothing wrong with expressing your opinions even if they're not popular but I do think that there is a slippery slope when it comes to how colleges expect their students to express themselves. "Be liberal but not too liberal...Wouldn't want to [censored] the Conservatives, right? ;) " ... "Be conservative but not TOO conservative... Wouldn't want the Liberals to call you racist, right? ;) " It would be nice if we could all attend our respective schools and say what we'd like, barring disrespect or insults.

Yacov,

"Be liberal but not too liberal...Wouldn't want to shove off the Conservatives, right? ;) " ... "Be conservative but not TOO conservative... Erica, let's not confuse the two.  There's a big difference between conservatism and bigotry.  All Conservatives are not necessarily bigots.  It's just that some people only use Conservatism as an excuse or a shield for being a bigot.

The whole subject of 'diversity' is worthless. There is this stupid statement that implies that 'one drop of black blood makes you a pyramid builder', that is stupid. You will run into half truths such as crispus attucks was a darkie, which is not true. He was an octaroon. Primitives will take anything and distort it to meet their own ends. Darkies have not done anything to benefit human kind. If you take away rape, murder, drug dealing, stealing and rap noise, you are left with nothing. These are creatures that must be put into a confined area where they can live out their useless lives in complete hedonism where they will be air dropped drugs, malt liquor, mac and cheese and some modern media devices so they will not bother white people with their constant complanits.

I have heard that Crispus Attucks was really a Natick Indian.  fjack, can you please elaborate further on that?

In thy power Almighty, trusting,
Did our fathers build of old;
Strengthen then, O Lord, their children
To defend, to love, to hold
That the heritage they gave us
For our children yet may be:
Bondsmen only to the Highest
And before the whole world free.
As our fathers trusted humbly,
Teach us, Lord, to trust Thee still:
Guard our land and guide our people
In Thy way to do Thy will.

If you don't like it when ignorant people refer to you and people of your pigment as "whitey" don't do the same thing by calling black people 'darkies". I don't think that way of you. And I do think that since I have NEVER come in here like that to any one of you, it would be nice if I wasn't seen as 'a darkie'.

Also, everytime you  mention bad black cultures (or just refer to all blacks as bad, period) you mention 'malt liquor', 'creatures', 'mac and cheese' (as if that is a BLACK food along with the stereotypical chicken and watermelon). I have no complaints outside of this board about any white people. Well I HAD two complaints but those two white people who were racist against me didn't represent the whole of the white race.

And about diversity, if I taught my children that they should despise white people simply because they are a different color and have a different cultural following, they wouldn't have all of the white friends they have. You and people here would ALSO call me racist. What I think is "worthless" is hating bad people but adding the good people into that group because they share the same pigment. It dosen't concern me if my children decide to date outside of their race when they're old enough because people are people in my eyes. All I ask is that they choose wisely when it comes to picking quality people. Men who will respect them rather than tear them down. Men who want something out of life rather than sitting on their behinds doing nothing, being about nothing.

And again, I have no problem with my daughters deciding for themselves which religion they wish to follow. So to that end, if you think it's wrong for me to teach them to respect your culture and religion (not necessarily you, fjack *because you didn't weigh in on what you thought of children learning about other cultures* but anyone), I don't know what to tell you.
