Well have alot of Dutch influence here. The Dutch first found New Zealand they had whale and Sealing stations way before Captain Cook claimed it for England.

In a way yes we are like Australia with the Dutch being the first on our shores.

We are a free settlement, no convicts. 

It was the British, the French, Greeks and Italians that created the settlement.

Later the Dutch returned, and the Germans as well.

But New Zealand is manly Greek, Italian and Dutch as the European element.

The Brits don't stay long, and now we have alot of American's settling here.
