Should The Confederate Flag Fly On Capitol Hill?
« on: January 19, 2008, 06:53:52 PM »
I think it should be the dual flag or at least displayed prominently as an important part of American Heritage and History.

We need an official national memorial to the brave men and women, both black and white, who fought in the Civil War on BOTH sides, with equal honor given to both.

(Although, I'm partial to the South)

That flag is the Naval Jack.  This is the real Confederate flag:

And yes, it should be displayed.

I see no problem with the Confederate flag, it's a symbol of the South and I would have no problem with it flying side by side with the American flag. I own an American flag, a Confederate flag, and a Israeli flag.

I've also got a Palestinkian and Nazi flag but those have burns in them when I used them for shooting practice with tracer rounds. They are great doormats, wipe your feet before entering my house.

What does the red and white stripe represent?

It was because the previous flag, the Stainless Banner, was sometimes mistaken for a flag of truce.  To eliminate that ambiguity, a vertical red stripe was added.

The Stainless Banner, the second flag of the Confederacy:

Why do they just call it "The Stars and Bars"?

This is the real Stars and Bars flag, the first flag of the Confederacy:

Oh please..the stars and stripes represents the USA and not the confederate flag. The confederate flag signifies the losing South during the Civil War. This country is a union for Gd's sake!

Now, I have no problem with South Carolina having that as their state flag...nothign wrong with that...

Besides simple pride in heritage, the reason many Southerners still care so much about this issue is that North and South have remained divided: culturally, morally, politically, etc.

We are a union of 50 states, but not all of the states have completely compatible cultures.

The yankees coming south and running amok during reconstruction certainly didn't help things and the rift  has never been mended.

Do people here think that there should be a new American flag merging the Confederate and Union flags, therefore making a true Union of North and South?

The South lost the civil war..that means that the Union flag which currently exists as the American flag shoudl be the only one to display representing this great nation.

I agree. The stars and bars can be displayed in the south on public buildings if they desire or on private residences here in the north but never more prominently than old glory in either place.

If you recall your history, the Capitol Hill sent its Union Army to take down the C.S.A. flag, and replace it with their own.
In order to do so they killed and pillaged over a large area.
More Americans lost their lives fighting The War of Northern Aggression, than in any other war the U.S. has fought.
Best to ask the Yankees of the Northern States if they will allow it.
I believe the actual name is "The Cross of St. Andrew".
Me?
Should be in museums and in books.
The South and its "cause" were crushed; so much so that 140 years after the fact Southerners still have a "chip on their shoulder" over losing the war.
Generally speaking, any place you drive up to, which has lots of pickup trucks with Rebel Flags and gun racks displayed in them, is a good place to get your *ss beat.
Better yet, drive through "schwartzetown, U.S.A." late at night in a car displaying the Rebel Flag; you're certain to meet some new friends.

I have no problem with southerners displaying the confederate flag and the union flag together since their culture and heritage is so different than the north's...but 140 years later to do it in every state and public place would be the wrong thing to do. The Winner takes all...

Did they change the amount of stars because more states joined The Confederacy?

The number of stars remained fixed at 13 since the second flag.

How many states were in it then?

Before Fort Sumter, there were seven states, and after Fort Sumter, there were eleven, although some claim thirteen.

Yes it should, I have no problem with that flag, it stands for a great people and great history of the south.  It is not a symbol of hatred.  If anything Southern love is genuine.

Too bad the rest of the country didn't take their warning when they warned about certain people.... YOU KNOW WHICH PEOPLE I mea

the  UMMMMMMMMMMMMM HMMMMMMMMMMM

What a shame the Yankee states didn't listen

I love the old fashion true confederate.   They wanted a good safe nation for their families.

Why does McCain call it racist?

Because he's a self-hating American.

From a legal perspective, nobody has a right to ban the flying of the Confederate flag. But the act of flying the Confederate flag is what I see as being a self-hating American. What the Confederacy stood for was the exact opposite of what America stands for.

The South should be honored.

Look at what happened:
They had no navy, no industry or factories, they were out-numbered and blockaded. The north should have crushed them in less than six months.

Yet, the yankees took more than four years to defeat them! The southerners fought 'til they hadn't a pot to p*ss in or a dram of powder left. Says a lot for southern courage and pride. If America has any hope of survival it will be because of the REAL Americans in the South and West (NOT KKKalifornia) and not the liberal, girlie-men in the North East.
