Three death row prisoners have been executed in Japan, the authorities have announced.

The justice ministry identified the men as convicted murderers Masahiko Matsubara, 63, Takashi Mochida, 65, and Keishi Nago, 37.

They were hanged at separate prisons in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka.

Human rights groups are critical of the secrecy surrounding executions in Japan, one of the few industrialised countries to retain the death penalty.

Relatives are told only after the hangings have taken place and this is just the second time the names of those executed have been publicly announced.

The first was in December 2007, when three men were executed.

Campaigners remain critical of Japan's continued use of the death penalty, but opinion polls suggest the policy is supported by an overwhelming majority of Japan's population.

"For extremely vicious criminal cases, public opinion holds that death sentences must be handed down and carried out," Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama said.

"We have considered a variety of factors so that we can carry out executions in a methodical manner, rather than thinking about the intervals and the timing," he said.

Nine people were executed in Japan in 2007. Friday's three executions are the first this year.

What's wrong wtih a death penalty against brutal murderers?

The death penalty is a righteous method to get rid of murderers, rapists, pedophiles, drug-dealers,
and comparable types of criminals.
Turkey must get out of NATO. NATO must get out of Kosovo-Serbia. Croats must get out of Crajina. All muslims must get out of Christian and Jewish land. Turks must get out of Cyprus. Turks must get out of "Istanbul". "Palestinians" must get out of Israel. Israel must become independent from USA.

Depends on who's getting killed...

Did you hear about the disabled women in Iraq who were given bombs to blow themselves up?

I would talk with the orthodox Jews on this forum about this...there are times to kill and times one shouldn't kill.

They have a right to get rid of these criminals. But hanging? Its so barbaric.
We stopped hanging people in the 20s I think.

Its just so weird for me to see that other people are still hanging people, its seems so wild-west/old fashioned.
hanging normally was done by letting the person fall, so that the neck breaks.
In that case, it is not more barbaric than a gunshot.

i think gas/electrical chair/venom are sometimes barbaric too.

And for certain cases, I think a slow death, is preferable,
if the criminal was really inhumane in his killing-methods himself.

well, I guess its because I'm not used to living in a society where people get hanged.
Sometimes if its not done right, the person will suffocate to death.
I take no gladness in seeing someone have a slow, painful death.

Even for people as hitler?

i think it would be ok to make his death barbaric.

Anyway, maybe discussing execution-methods is unsuitable, for a religious forum

what's teh difference?

murder: kill intentionally and with premeditation; "The mafia boss ordered his enemies murdered"

Kill: the act of terminating a life

Killing a person in self defense is not murder, neither is the death penalty which is punishment for a persons crimes.

Perhaps we could use each method in equal measure.  For example, a firing squad could be given misaligned weapons to ensure that none of the bullets cause death, then the condemned could be hung just enough to almost choke to death, then cut down, & resuscitated with an oxygen mask full of just enough cyanide to make them start to turn green, then give them lethal injection of all the wrong stuff, so that they're in excruciating pain.  Then, have the telephone ring and the warden will answer it and announce "It's the Governor...STOP THE EXECUTION!".  (big gasp heard from all the witnesses & executioners, etc...).  Then a clergyman goes over to "speak to the spiritual needs of the newly freed prisoner...and then he says, "WE LIED!"...AND YOU DIED!" "HA HA HA!"...Then the prisoner is strapped into the electric chair and slowly roasted at low to moderate voltage; the full current is let loose after about an hour and a half, and after he's dead someone can put the roasted meat in a guillotine and chop off its head.
The following day, Grilled Brisket will appear on the prison lunch menu.
The final few hours prior to the scheduled execution time can be used to blast high decibel audio recordings of the Devil and souls burning in hell, and holographic imagery of Satan and eternal hell fire tortures can be shown in his cell in order to calm the condemned.
