Well, before matrimony, there has to be some kind of serious relationship where you get to know the person in depth, no?  Sure, finding someone to marry would be great under ideal circumstances, but I'm talking about the process leading up to this.  It can often be an uncomfortable one, at least from my experiences, because if you realize it is not meant to be long-term you have to hurt someone's feelings.
