Report: ‘October 2000’ Families To Visit South Africa
(IsraelNN.com) Family members of Arab Israelis killed in violent riots in 2000 plan to visit South Africa, according to Nrg. The Arab advocacy group Adalah is sponsoring the trip. Adalah head Hassan Jabarin explained that the group chose South Africa because South African President Thabo Mbeki is known for resolving regional conflicts.
The trip was planned after the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens in Israel decided to enlist foreign leaders in its fight against the government’s decision to close investigations into the 2000 riots and police officers’ use of force. While police argue that rioters were using deadly weapons against officers and that the use of live fire was justified, family members of those killed say police used disproportionate force and should face charges.
