Jerusalem Okays 600 Housing Units In Pisgat Ze'ev

(IsraelNN.com) The Jerusalem Planning and Building Committee Monday approved building 600 housing units in Pisgat Ze'ev, located on land that was restored to Israel in 1967 following the Six-Day War. Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski said the plans "are part of an overall program for building 40,000 new units in the city."

The approval coincides with the visit of American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who marked a sharp change in American policy earlier this year by defining the Har Homa community, also part of the restored area, as a "settlement." She has maintained that building must be halted until negotiations are completed with the Palestinian Authority (PA) for a new Arab state within Israel's current borders. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, bowing to demands from coalition partner Shas, said Monday that building will continue in all of Jerusalem because the area will be part of any final status agreement
