Army officer breaks up Vic expo attack
Friday Apr 11 21:50 AEST

An army recruiting officer broke up a brawl at a school careers expo in which students were slashed with knives in Melbourne.

Two youths have been charged after the assault in which three students were injured at the Caulfield Racecourse, in Melbourne's south-east.

Detective Senior Constable Scott Hornidge told AAP the army officer was the first person to get involved.

"The army guy helped pull them apart," he said.

"The youths were unknown to each other, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing."

Two boys aged 15 and 17 years, both from Oakleigh in Melbourne's south-east, will each face three counts of intentionally causing injury, three counts of recklessly causing injury, three counts of unlawful assault and three counts of assault in company.

The 15-year-old has been bailed by police to appear in a Children's Court on June 25.

The 17-year-old faces three additional charges of assault with a weapon. He appeared in an out-of-sessions hearing and was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Children's Court on Monday.

The incident happened at a careers expo for final year high school students from all over Victoria.

Police say the fight was between students from different south-east secondary schools at about 11.30am.

Acting Sergeant David Chapman told reporters it escalated into a "push and shove".

"At some point a weapon has been used, and three male youths have received minor lacerations," acting sergeant Chapman said.

The three injured students were taken to Monash Hospital, two of them suffering slash wounds to their arms, while the third had a swollen jaw, an ambulance spokesman said.

The three-day event will continue as normal.
