Just make sure you know all of its care needs and how long it will live, and what vet to take it to.

This page says you need at least two ducks:

That's true.

Can they be taught to poop only in a certain place?

Probably not, but cows can't either and some people find them to be great family pets as long as they have enough land for them to graze on. Apparently they can be quite affectionate and learn their own names, etc.

As long as Ari has the right knowledge and right things to care properly for an animal he should be able to have any animal he chooses.

I'm not disputing that.

I think it's a cool idea.

You could start a little duck farm. Ducks are really easy to keep, if they had a little pond and some place, where they can run. They like a small doghouse with some straw. :)

You can feed them with corn or other cerial and sometimes a slug from the garden is a banquet for them. Some ducks like to eat sometimes lettuce.

And you will always have a roast for the cold monthes.

The most important thing with ducks is that they have always a cup of water.  O0

P.S.:

Rubystars is right. One duck alone is not happy. They need company! Buy a male and a female duck :)

Ducks are sweet.  My Dad and I raised some baby ducks when I was a kid.  They lived in my room for a while and they sure could make a stink!  ;D  So if you're planning to have it in the house you'll probably have to do a lot of cleaning.  If it's staying outside only, I think it would be a lovely pet as long as you have a big yard and a pond for it.  :)

That's what I'm thinking? I guess you have to train them.

No there are different races of ducks. Some are able to fly (you have to cut their wings) some are not.

We released ours at my Dad's farm after they got big enough to look after themselves.  They do fly away occasionally and stay gone quite a while. But they always come back.  :)

Some yes..and on a farm or a territory specifically for ducks with a pond or lake shoudl be fine..but not inside a home away from it's natural habitat.

As soon as a chick..a baby chick duck hatches, the first thing or mother it sees , it follows..it's called imprinting. If one decides to be around when ducklings hatch, beware that it will think of you it's "mother"...And if you can't fly, they probably won't fly away either.

I wrote about the duck I had for Passover in The Kosher Food Section.

I prefer living ducks.

I'll eat chickens though.

Thanks for the answers guys.  They are elegant animals, and hopefully I can still get one someday.  However, after perusing sites, including the one Ruby posted, I think it would be better to wait until I had a property with a little pond area in the backyard.  Also, they seem to need other ducks to socialize with, so it would probably be cruel to have just one, and I'm not sure if I have the time for an entire duck squadron.  G-d willing I will have that little pond eventually.  I'll keep you posted.  P.S., Yacov, you may have eaten my future duck.   >:(

lol, probably true, but that sort of defeats the whole idea of "pet".
