What is your ethnic background?

I am curious what everyones ethnic background is on the forums?

My mothers family is German/Austrian, she practices Judaism however (her family is Catholic)

My fathers family is Russian and Romanian background and Jewish.

I am still confused by the term German Jewish and Russian Jewish, does this imply that the person was from there but is not ethnically German or Russian for example?

Like a lot of people think I am a German Jew and I explain to them that my mother is not ethnically Jewish.

But then a lot of Russians say I do not look slavic or Russian, but a lot of people say my father looks Greek or mediterranean. So I am still a bit confused from this?

A fellow Jew explained it to me like this, that a white man can be a resident of China but will never be ethnically Chinese unless they mix with the Chinese population therefore having mixed Chinese/white offspring.

Personally, I feel that this is EXTREMELY important to distinguish because of several reasons:

1. I have a very German last name and if you didn't know any better, you'd think I wasn't Jewish.

2. I want to separate myself as much as possible from being associated with Germany's past as well as Russia's/USSR because of their antiSemitism past and present.

3. Also, I will never patronize Europe in any way!

But this is just me.

You expressed my thoughts exactly Paulette... I had a Persian Girlfriend in Highschool. Unfortunately her family was Muslim {I didnt know at the time}. Of course that relationship never worked out...

As a general statement on this topic, I suspect strongly that most Jews resemble, both in appearance and name, the population of the countries they were originally from. There is no such thing as a "Jewish race", and there are many, many different Jewish ethnicities. German Jews are totally racially and ethnically separate from Sfardim/Mizrachim from Morocco or Ethiopia.

Only Nazis would ever claim that there is such a thing as a Jewish genotype or an organized Judaic ethnicity (not that anyone here did, but it's always useful to say as a reminder).

Actually there is DNA from Y chromosome (fathers side) that traces Jews to the original Israelites.

I am a Cohen which is in use in some European countries (Germany, Ireland) but most people associate Cohen as being a Jewish name.

All the Cohens I know have Jewish lineage of some sort.

There is also Y chromosomal Cohen Modal Haplotype
