The Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday gave a Palestinian man two life sentences and a further 17 years in prison for the rape and murder of a 9-year-old Israeli girl and the murder of an Israeli man in 2006.

Anwar Ahdush, 37, was illegally residing in Israel when he bludgeoned David Ben-Hamo to death with an ax and set fire to the body, claiming he had been selling drugs to children.

Two days later, Ahdush met Lipaz Himi, the girl, who asked him for NIS 10 at a market in Beit Shemesh. Ahdush, a resident of the West Bank village of Tsurif, then invited her back to the place where he was staying, where he violently raped her and then strangled her to death. He rolled the body in a blanket and left her at the site.

"I am a person, I have never murdered anyone. I am telling you that I thank you for accusing me. I am grateful to you for oppressing me. There is a G-d," said Ahdush to the judges after the court ruling was given.
