Relentless airstrikes target Gaza tunnels
« on: December 30, 2008, 04:45:06 PM »
Israel has resumed pounding positions near Gaza's border with Egypt, claiming a series of tunnels under the border town of Rafah were hit.
The Israeli military announcement on Tuesday came three days after the forces claimed sortie operations had destroyed as many as 40 underground tunnels used by Gazans to counter the Israeli-imposed blockade.

The Israeli army also denied reports that the Israeli government had been advised to observe a 48-hour unilateral ceasefire before continuing the offensive, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.

"There is no ceasefire," a spokeswoman for the Israeli forces told DPA, adding that the deadly Israeli raids that have killed over 385 and wounded 1,800 Gazans would continue.

Israel's Channel 10 said "many" jets were utilized in the second wave of attacks on the tunnels since "Operation Cast Lead" began on Saturday.

The vast network of tunnels has been used to import much-needed fuel and basic consumer needs, in short supply since Israel tightened its blockade of Gaza in November, leaving Rafah as the territory's only connection to the outside world.

Meanwhile, Palestinians' hopes for some kind of relief were dashed again on Tuesday when Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak insisted that the Rafah border crossing would remain closed, despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
