One of three things are possible:
1. There is no type of life anywhere on any planet in the universe.
2. There is intelligent life anywhere on any planet in the universe.
3. there is life, but no intelligent life anywhere else in the universe (Muman's answer).
Never thought of it, but Muman brings up a good point. When Gd created the universe, He created it for us and humanity. Therefore, if it was ever necessary for humankind to colonize other planets in the universe, it would be for survival since these planets would be habitable for man to eat the livestock and plants on that planet if they couldn't grow earth plants or animals. Everythign on that planet is a tool for human kind to use it for its gain.
If the universe, however, is billions upon billions of years old, and humans came to be through evolution...that is, when Gd created humankind, He did it in such a way as described by evolutionary theorists that humans and monkeys evolved from the same monkey squirrel who had sexual relations with a frog with legs millions of years back to beget us, then it is quite possible that evolution of a different type might have taken place in another world somewhere else where instead of upright beings with apposable thumbs thrived, beings wtith flat noses and wings thrived instead...and only due to different occurrences on that planet (than our planet), different gravity, different weather, different natural events etc..
And finally, there is the option that this universe was solely created for us human beings and not meant for us to live on. At this time, this is the only true answer out there....only because we have no proof of anything else being out there...that the stars and planets in other galaxies are either unreachable or uninhabitable..and were solely created for our marvel to understand Gd's peculiar way and His majesty and all of His wonderful creations!
