US envoy predicts 'direct diplomacy' with Iran
« on: January 26, 2009, 01:19:09 PM »
UNITED NATIONS – The newly installed U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says the Obama administration will engage in "direct diplomacy" with Iran.

But Susan Rice warned of further action unless Tehran meets U.N. Security Council demands to suspend uranium enrichment as a prelude to talks on its nuclear program.

Rice told reporters shortly after meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on her first day in her new job on Monday that the U.S. plan for "vigorous diplomacy that includes direct diplomacy" with Iran "must go hand in hand" with a firm message from the U.S. and international community that Iran must meet it Security Council obligations.

She said Iran's "continuing refusal to do so will only cause pressure to increase."

This story is the very definition of a mixed message, and mixed messages are dangerous when dealing with fools, and by that I mean on their side AND ours.  Is this what Biden was babbling about when he predicted that there would be an international crisis early in Obama's tenure that would show that Obama 'has steel in his spine'?  Is Obama self-absorbed enough to go looking for another fight after campaigning on a surrender platform for two existing fronts?

And what if the Iranians already have a nuke?  And even if they don't, they surely have enough radioactive garbage to make a large collection of dirty bombs.

Just the other day, there was a piece of some major newspaper (may have been NYT) that more or less parroted the age-old discussion about 'Islamic moderates', claiming that the hardliners in Iran would be overthrown the moment military pressure was brought to bear.  Seems to me we heard the same thing about Iraq just a few years ago.

Are we witnessing the birth of Lyndon Baines Obama?
