ITALY'S gaffe-prone Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is facing a hail of criticism after he said he wished there were enough soldiers to protect "beautiful girls" from rape.
Centre-left opposition leader Walter Veltroni denounced Berlusconi's "lack of responsibility and sensitivity" after the flamboyant prime minister said that rapes were impossible to prevent "even in a police state".
He added: "We would need as many soldiers as there are beautiful girls in Italy, which I think we would never achieve."
The remarks came after two rapes in the Rome area last week prompted Berlusconi to announce that his government would increase to 30,000 the number of soldiers helping police to patrol the streets of crime-prone Italian cities.
Veltroni's deputy Dario Franceschini also slammed the remarks, saying they were "unacceptably vulgar", while a MP of the small Italy of Values party said they were of "questionable taste".
Berlusconi backtracked in the face of the criticism, saying he meant his remarks as a "compliment" to Italian women and arguing that people should "never lose their sense of humour and levity".
