HOLOCAUST WRITER CANCELS LECTURES
By ARI L. GOLDMAN
Published: Wednesday, March 23, 1988

Elie Wiesel, the chronicler of the Holocaust, decided yesterday to cancel a day of lectures scheduled for tomorrow after learning that the lectures were underwritten by a conservative Michigan publisher who has been accused by the Justice Department of being an agent of the South African Government.

Mr. Wiesel, the winner of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize, said he was not aware of any connection with South Africa when he accepted the engagement at Northern Michigan University several months ago. He said he reconsidered after several faculty members at the school asked him not to attend.

''When it comes to apartheid you cannot make compromises,'' Mr. Wiesel said, referring to South Africa's policy of strict racial segregation and discrimination against blacks.

The publisher, John McGoff, could not be reached for comment yesterday in his office at the Global Communications Corporation in Williamston, Mich. But he has previously denied that he has ever served as an agent of a foreign government and has said no foreign government has ever tried to own any interest in his media properties. Foreign Agent Charges Dropped

An internal investigation in 1979 by the South African Government found that $11.35 million had been transferred to Mr. McGoff in an unsuccessful attempt to purchase The Washington Star, a now-defunct newspaper.

The Justice Department prosecuted Mr. McGoff in 1986 for failing to register as an agent of the South African Government, but a Federal court dismissed the charge on the ground that a five-year statute of limitations in the case had already expired.

Mr. Wiesel had been scheduled to appear on the university's campus in Marquette, on the shores of the Lake Superior, as part of the McGoff Distinguished Lecture Series, which was established by the publisher with a $300,000 grant in 1978.

Mr. Wiesel's honorarium was to range from $10,000 to $25,000, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. Mr. Wiesel said he was not aware of the exact amount because it was handled by his agent, the Harry Walker Agency of New York. #2,500 Expected at Lecture Mr. Wiesel said he had planned to donate the fee to the building of a yeshiva and synagogue in Jersusalem in memory of his father, Shlomo, who was a victim of the Holocaust, in which more than six million European Jews were killed by the Nazis before and during World War II.

About 2,500 people were expected to hear Mr. Wiesel deliver his main address on the Holocaust tomorrow night at the university's C.B. Hedgecock Field House. He also was to have mingled with students and members of the faculty, and was scheduled to address 300 students from 22 high schools in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

''I feel profoundly hurt that I will disappoint some people,'' Mr. Wiesel said, adding that he had been urged by some members of the faculty to go ahead with the engagement and use the platform to denounce racism in general and the racial policies of South Africa in particular. But that approach, he said, would be a form of compromise.

''What did I really learn from my life?'' he asked. ''When it comes to mass humiliation, a compromise is already playing the other side's game. And what is apartheid but collective humiliation; futhermore, it is legal humiliation. In South Africa, humiliation is the law of the land. Therefore, we cannot make any compromises.''

So he bends over backwards for Muslims who kill Jews but not when it comes to the white South African government which was fighting the ANC, a pro Muslim communist group whose leader Nelson Mandela hugged Yassir Arafat?  Where is his criticism of "one settler, one bullet" from the Pan Africanist Congress? Isn't that a bit intolerant?

Why should you have to apologize? You had a legitimate question. Since he is a self-hating kapo Nazi, the whole world worships him and refuses to let negative information about him circulate. Not many people know he is evil.
