o wonder Mrs Merkel's Interior Minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, warned in Der Spiegel: "We learned from the worldwide economic crisis of the 1920s that an economic crisis can result in an incredible threat for all of society."

"The consequence of that depression was Adolf Hitler and, indirectly, World War II and Auschwitz."

Newspaper parallels with 1929 are bad enough, but God forbid the comparisons start to be political as well economic. Those spectres seem distant when political extremism in Germany, certainly on the Right, can often seem the province of a disenfranchised and discontented few.

But there are worries that radicalism is already part of the mainstream, with the Left Party, successors to former Communists, soaring in the polls. The SPD has already flirted with the Left at state level. If a coalition allowed it to take power next year, could it resist?

The answer, especially after an SPD putsch which placed moderates firmly at the party's helm, is probably 'yes'. But as Mr Schaeuble intones, German politics, marked for years by an almost infuriating lethargy that is the hallmark of the country's oft proclaimed 'consensus society', is not immune to the febrility that has struck the markets.

With the stakes so high it should come as no surprise the woman hailed as Europe's most formidable multi-lateralist has turned her coat so swiftly.

History and hyperinflation have taught Mrs Merkel that German stability is more important than European unity, because without Germany stability, Europe has no guarantee of peace, let alone unity. And she is far too astute a politician not to realise that putting Germany first is also the best way of securing her own tenure at the Chancellery next year
