China says 140 dead in Xinjiang unrest

At least 140 people have been killed in rioting in the capital of China's northwestern region of Xinjiang, with the government blaming exiled Muslim separatists for the area's worst case of ethnic unrest in years.

Hundreds of rioters have been arrested, the official Xinhua news agency reported, after rock-throwing Uighurs took to the streets of the regional capital on Sunday, some burning and smashing vehicles and confronting ranks of anti-riot police.

The unrest underscores the volatile ethnic tensions that have accompanied China's growing economic and political stake in its western frontiers.

But independent analysts said the trouble in the resource-rich region was unlikely to have a major impact on China's economy because of the remoteness of the area and restricted access.

Beijing's image as a responsible power, though, may take a hit.

"In terms of China's domestic economy, it is in a remote place and it does not have a big impact on things generally unless there is some evidence, of which there is none, that the government is in some meaningful way losing control," said Arthur Kroeber, Managing Director of Dragonomics, a research and advisory firm in Beijing.

A senior Chinese government official said the unrest was the work of extremist forces abroad, signaling a security crackdown in the strategic region near Pakistan and central Asia.

Li Zhi, the Communist Party boss of regional capital Urumqi told a news conference that the death toll from the rioting had risen to 140, the semi-official China News Agency said. Xinhua said 816 people were injured and hospitalized.

"Police have tightened security in downtown Urumqi streets and at key institutions such as power and natural gas companies and TV stations to prevent large-scale riots," Xinhua quoted Xinjiang police chief Liu Yaohua as saying.

Police rounded up "several hundred" who participated in the violence, including more than 10 key players who fanned unrest, Xinhua said, and are searching for 90 others.

Residents in Urumqi were unable to access the Internet on Monday, several said. "The city is basically under martial law," Yang Jin, a dried fruit merchant, said by telephone.

CLASHES IN JUNE

The riot in Urumqi, a city of 2.3 million residents 3,270 km (2,050 miles) west of Beijing, followed a protest against government handling of a June clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in southern China, where two Uighurs died in Shaoguan.

The China Daily put the number of protesters at 300 to 500 while the exiled Uyghur (also spelt Uighur) American Association had it as high as 3,000.

"After the (Shaoguan) incident, the three forces abroad strived to beat this up and seized it as an opportunity to attack us, inciting street protests," Xinjiang governor Nuer Baikeli, a Uighur, said in a speech shown on Xinjiang television.

The "three forces" refer to groups the government says engage in separatism, militant action and religious extremism.

An unnamed Chinese official said the "unrest was masterminded by the World Uyghur Congress led by Rebiya Kadeer", according to Xinhua. "This was a crime of violence that was pre-meditated and organised," said the report.

Rebiya Kadeer is a Uighur businesswoman now in exile in the United States after years in jail, and accused of separatist activities. She did not answer calls for comment.

But exiled Uighur groups adamantly rejected the Chinese government claim of a plot. They said the riot was an outpouring of pent-up anger over government policies and Han Chinese dominance of economic opportunities.

"They're blaming us as a way to distract the Uighurs' attention from the discrimination and oppression that sparked this protest," said Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the World Uyghur Congress in exile in Sweden.

The government's claims of conspiracy by pro-independence exiles echo the handling of rioting across Tibetan areas in March last year, which Beijing also called a plot hatched abroad.

Xinjiang is the doorway to China's trade and energy ties with central Asia, and is itself rich in gas, minerals and farm produce. But many Uighurs say they see little of that wealth.

"In Xinjiang one of the major sources of discontent is that there is still a major gap economically between Han and Uighurs," said Barry Sautman, a specialist on China's ethnic politics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Almost half of Xinjiang's 20 million people are Uighurs. The population of Urumqi is mostly Han Chinese, and the city is under tight police security even in normal times.

Chinese state television showed rioters throwing rocks at police and overturning a police car, and smoke billowing from burning vehicles.

The Uighurs belong originally to Turkmenistan and have spread in to Sinkyang due to the general muslamic policy of expansionism and global religious domination.

Sinkyang is a very large province but anywhere even if the muslamics start residing in a small ant mound hole, they start claiming their ant mound hole to be a sovereign khaliphat republic.

This is a situation where I don't really favor either side. The Muslim Nazis are not really any worse than the Red Chinese NWO slavemasters they are fighting. The Chinese Antichrist (a New Testament [Book of Revelation] reference to the new world order ruler who will enslave the whole earth) regime might indeed treat some of this jihadist slime properly, but then they will turn around and sell advanced missiles to Iran and small arms to Hamas and Hezbollah.

As Serb said I don't support either side as Muslims are evil, they only understand death, and the Chinese communist's are just a bunch of Stalin's. They don't give a dam about their people only other than controlling their every move. So I don't care what happens to these Muslims. Pure evil is the lightest way I can describe them.

China is the Red Dragon, who is expected to be chained for a thousand years.

However Papistan666 is the 666 and Muslamic Empire is to be led by the False Prophet, who both are expected to be erased out from their roots.

Situation is confusing but the balance of justice of Hashem is clearly in the favor of Red Dragon, who albeit chained but survives for another one thousand years in some form or the other.

Something good is happening there: China will open it's eyes to the Muslim countries. They have always been pretty neutral or even supporters of Muslim countries. Now they get shook a bit to realize what can be a threat to their superpower status. I hope they nuke these Uyghurs and with them they should nuke Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. They are always accused of being evil anyway. So they do not have anything to lose! They have my strongest support (the Chinese).
I know from a Thai friend that even in Southern Thailand there are Muslim communities who sometimes kill the Buddhist majority. I just wonder why they never leave the place instead of causing conflicts! What keeps them from settling down in Kirghistan or Tajikistan instead of provoking those who are stronger than them just to later accuse them for being "muslim-haters" and "murderers"!? Just like those fakestinians do with Israel.

This is an important distinction:  communists are deluded with a corrupt belief system, but the muslims are deluded with a corrupt belief system to the point of complete irrationality.  When they think that blowing themselves up while killing others that don't believe exactly what they want them to believe is a good thing, that is completely irrational and therefore makes them infinitely more dangerous than the communists.  At least the Soviets could be deterred by mutually assured destruction (MAD), but the muslim nazis actually are mad!  They will inevitably use WMDs against us and then we'll have to respond, hopefully not completely irrationally like we did after 9/11 by attacking two soverign countries that in no way threatened us.  Either way, the next 5-7 years will be eventful.

I Agree with GF especialy since present Chinese goveremnt is comie in name only; still it's better to have Dragon far away from your border as for the Chinese slave masters the identity of slughtered is irelevant. The evil will always consume itself in the end.
Jeremiah 8:11-17

11 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. Peace, peace, they say, when there is no peace.

12 Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when they are punished, says the LORD.

13 'I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD. There will be no grapes on the vine. There will be no figs on the tree, and their leaves will wither. What I have given them will be taken from them.'

14 Why are we sitting here? Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there! For the LORD our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against him.

15 We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there was only terror.

16 The snorting of the enemy's horses is heard from Dan; at the neighing of their stallions the whole land trembles. They have come to devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who live there.

17 See, I will send venomous snakes among you, vipers that cannot be charmed, and they will bite you, declares the LORD.

There is nothing to choose between the Uighurs i.e. the muslamic disciples of the false prophet Vs the Red dragon, except that one of them is to outlive the other.

Now just see that how juicily the Papistan666 is managing to drive out the Red Dragon out of it's deep dark pit:

Muslamics stabbing China in the Back.

China indicates Uighur terrorists have close links with Pak
21 Oct 2008, 2126 hrs IST, Saibal Dasgupta , TNN

BEIJING: Within five days of Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari visiting Beijing, Chinese authorities on Tuesday indicated that most of the terrorists operating on its soil have close links with similar groups and base camps in Pakistan. The statement is meant to exert serious pressure on Pakistan at a time with Islamabad is desperately seeking financial and nuclear assistance from Beijing.

China's Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday listed major terrorist leaders of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement while saying that they were involved with similar groups and base camps in a "south Asian country" for the purpose of training and exchange of arms and ammunitions. The movement is fighting for carving out China's Xinjiang province and other parts of Central Asia to create an East Turkistan nation for several decades, sources said.

The ministry did not identify the "south Asian country". But terrorism experts say that the reference to Pakistan, which borders China's troubled Xinjiang province, is obvious. ETIM, which has been identified by the United Nations as a terrorist group, is known to be head quartered in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) of Pakistan.

Rohan Gunaratna, who heads the Singapore based International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research, recently said there is overwhelming evidence that the ETIM has been providing training to Uighur terrorists at camps located in Pakistan and Afghanistan. ETIM has also "built a village exclusively for the Uighurs" in the White Mountains of Afghanistan near Jalalabad and the Pakistan border, he said.

Indications are that the Chinese government is asking Pakistan to provide all the necessary assistance in order to apprehend the Uighur outlaws. Most of the major terrorists leaders are on the run and enjoy the backing of groups based in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia, sources said.

As its first target, the ministry named Memetiming Memeti, head of ETIM since 2003, who was last seen in a video distributed over the Internet in June this year. He "illegally exited China and joined the ETIM terrorist organization in a south Asian country" in 1998 and went on to become the main organiser for the groups training camps. "In January, he issued an order to conduct terrorist attack specifically targeting the Beijing Olympic Games," the ministry said.

"Muslims from the Uighur region have travelled to Pakistan and Central Asia for terrorist and extremist training, where they have been exposed to the global jihad movement. For example, the two Uighur women involved in the March 18 attack on China Southern Airlines flight CZ6901 were controlled by a Pakistani militant group," Gunaratna said in an article recently.

The ministry released details of the terrorist activities of eight ultra leaders revealing that they have wide ranging links in East Asia, South Asia and West Asia. But it did not name any country specifically. The ministry's list of terrorists include Emeti Yakuf, also know as Aibu Abudureheman and Saifula, Memetituersun Yiming, also known as Abuduaini, Memetituersun Abuduhalike, also known as Metusun Abuduhalike, Ansarui, Xiamisidingaihemaiti Abudumijiti, also known as Saiyide, Aikemilai Wumaierjiang and Tuersun Toheti.

China bans mosque prayers in Urumqi

A Chinese official said that mosques in riot-hit Urumqi have been ordered to stay closed for Friday prayers in the wake of ethnic violence that left 156 dead, and another city in Xinjiang province has suspended visits by foreigners.

The official who identified herself as a government worker but refused to give her name said on Friday that the decision to close mosques had been made for public safety and that "people should stay at home today and pray."

Separately, officials in Kashgar in southwestern Xinjiang have told visiting journalists that they and other foreigners had to leave the city.

The city's foreign affairs office says that although the city has had no unrest, the decision was made to ensure the safety of the visitors.

Uighur Muslims said they had been directed to pray at home, as armed forces saturated the streets of the northwest Xinjiang region's capital five days after clashes that authorities said left 156 people dead.

"The government said there would be no Friday prayers," said a Uighur man named Tursun outside the Hantagri mosque, one of the oldest in the capital, as about 100 policemen carrying machine guns and batons stood guard nearby.

"There's nothing we can do... the government is afraid that people will use religion to support the three forces."

The "three forces" is a Chinese government term referring to extremism, separatism and terrorism, forces it says are trying to split the remote Xinjiang region from the rest of the country.

Xinjiang's eight million Uighurs have long complained about religious, political and economic repression under Chinese rule, and this deep-set anger spilled out on Sunday in protests that quickly turned violent.

The Chinese government said 156 people were killed and more than 1,000 others were injured, as Uighur Muslims attacked people from China's dominant Han ethnic group.

But Uighur exiles have said security forces over-reacted to peaceful protests. They said up to 800 people may have died in the unrest, including the security crackdown.

The unrest continued early in the week as thousands of Han Chinese took to the streets wielding knives, poles, meat cleavers and other makeshift weapons vowing vengeance against the Uighurs.

AFP witnessed Han Chinese mobs assaulting two Uighurs in separate attacks, and Uighurs alleged many other beatings took place, but the extent of the violence throughout the week was unclear.

China poured in thousands of extra police and army troops on Tuesday, and the Urumqi government said the situation was under control the next day.

Many security forces remained in place on Friday, and the traditional Muslim day of prayer passed with many Uighurs and other Muslims such as from the Hui ethnic group unable to attend mosques.

"Go home to pray," said handwritten notices on the front gates of five shuttered mosques that AFP visited on Thursday.

The Liu Daowan mosque in a Uighur and Hui district of eastern Urumqi, which normally holds about 1,000 people, was also closed on Friday, according to an AFP reporter who went there.

The small Xida mosque that Hui normally attend was also shut.

"According to an order from higher up, out of concern for the safety of the people and during this special time, we ask all people to go home and pray there," a notice outside said.

"We don't want to give the criminal element a chance to ruin the situation. The government fears that the bad elements will try to use Islam to promote the three forces," said an assistant imam named Feng.

When asked if all mosques in Urumqi were closed on Friday, a spokesman for the Xinjiang regional government told AFP that "all religious activities should go on normally", without elaborating.

China's leaders vowed on Thursday to severely punish those responsible for this week's unrest, the nation's worst ethnic conflict for decades.

"The planners of the incident, the organisers, key members and the serious violent criminals must be severely punished," President Hu Jintao and the other eight members of the ruling Communist Party's elite Politburo said.

Local party leaders in Urumqi had on Wednesday warned that people involved in any killings would be sentenced to death, and earlier announced that more than 1,400 people had been arrested for their involvement in the unrest.

This will eventually happen here in the US if we keep letting the muslims in.  They will congregate to certain areas of the country; then when they have enough muslims living in those areas where they are the majority in those areas, they will then  want to break those area away from the US and demand those areas become separate nations.  They will state their justification for doing this is due to sever maltreatment by the US government.

The extension of this logic means that permanent closure of the  mosques has to be done for permanent public safety.
