IDF goes potty
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:35:22 PM »
The Israeli Army has few enough talented officers, so dismissing them for minor infractions is stupid, and must be politically or ideologically motivated. Or even due to petty pique, rivalry or jealousy

I suspect that despite the hopes placed in him, Ashkenazi is going to turn out even worse than Halutz!

Gabi Ashkenazi is a good Chief of Staff. He is trying to fix the errors done by his predecessors and restore IDF's combat spirit.

He is absolutely right that he spoke out against that Imad Fares. It is not proper for the IDF officer to lie.
Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help (Psalms 146:3)

When Ulysses Grant was criticized for drinking, Lincoln said "I don't care: that man can fight!".

The only Israeli combat unit that inflicted heavy close combat casualties on Hizbollah in 2006, whilst sustaining none, was the Druze "Cherev" batallion

That the Druze Fares was made to resign, is a loss to the IDF's close combat ability. Regular Jewish IDF soldiers, not being equipped with bayonets, are loathe to engage in hand to hand combat.

What nonsense! You are implying that Druze soldiers are great fighters and Jews just capable to push buttons in their air conditioned tanks and jets! You should know that German and American soldiers also loathed hand-to-hand fighting whereas French (early in WWI), Soviets (early in WWII) and Japanese (early in WWII) always tried to engage in it. So, we should deduce that Waffen SS, Wehrmacht and US Army were really ineffective fighters? There is such a thing as conduct unbecoming  officer, and any army that condones it and doesn't instill honorable behavior in its officers and NCOs is bound to loose its fighting ability. Romans are much better example in creating and managing an effective fighting force than Lincoln. And Romans severely punished any officer, regardless of previous honors, if he did not follow army rules and regulations.

The IDF does not equip its troops with bayonets, for "financial" reasons and because using cold steel to stab some one is "cruel" and "un-Jewish"!

The bayonet is a very useful weapon.

The Druze Cherev battallion purchase their own bayonets. IDF Jewish soldiers are good fighters. But for close-quarter combat, having a bayonet and being trained how to use it is essential.

If you haven't got a bayonet, when your ammo runs out, you will die at the hands of the man who has a bayonet: you've seen the film "Southern Comfort"?!

Hizbollah, Hamas and Fatah fighters all carry nasty pike bayonets for their AKs. Just having a bayonet on you makes a big psychological and morale difference, increasing aggressiveness and the urge to kill and win.

The behaviour and performance of the IDF in the last 40 years makes one wonder if the conspiracists have a point when they claim that there has been an NWO/Erev Rav/Tarmodean subversive infiltration of every sector of the Israeli Establishment, dedicated to defanging Israelis and to make them lose! Even to the extent of not kitting troops with such a basic weapon/tool as the bayonet, the only army in the world to do so!

R.Kahane appreciated the Druze, just like he appreciated and new how to make use of the Xtian Zionists. The Druze are basically Arabized off-shoot of Islam mercenaries, and part of their religion is to be loyal and to sell their considerable fighting skills to their host nation. So let's use them - while they're still on our side!

MANY DRUZE ARE ACTUALLY KURDS, THE U.S. HAS BAYONETS BUT MOST OF BETTER SPECIAL Ops USE COMBAT  knifes .Ithink it would be a good idea to give and train soldiers inIsrael with BAYONETS it would give them more confidence and fighting spirit

U.S.

The modern sawback U.S. M9 bayonet, officially adopted in 1984, is issued with a special sheath designed to double as a wire cutter, developed by Phobis III. Some production runs of the M9 have a fuller and some do not, depending upon which contractor manufactured that batch and what the military specs were at the time. The M9 bayonet partially replaced, but is used in addition to, the older M6 and M7 bayonets, introduced in 1957 and 1964 respectively. Many troops have retained the M7, since the M9 has a reputation for breakage due to a combination of its thin blade and varying quality among the various contractors used.
US Marines at bayonet practice

As of 2002, the U.S. Marine Corps is also issuing small quantities of new bayonets of a different design from the M9, with an 8-inch Bowie knife-style blade and no fuller, manufactured by the Ontario Knife Company of New York. This new bayonet, the OKC-3S, is cosmetically similar to the Marines' famed Ka-Bar fighting knife. The weapon upgrade is part of a push begun four years ago by then-Commandant Gen. James L. Jones to expand and toughen hand-to-hand combat training for Marines, including more training in the martial arts and knife fighting. The new bayonet — with a 8-inch (20 cm) long, 1+3⁄8 in (3.49 cm) wide, .2-inch (0.51 cm) thick steel blade, and weighing 1.25 pounds (0.57 kg) with its sheath — is slightly longer, thicker, and heavier than the current M9. A sharper point and serrations near the handle help penetrate body armor that many modern adversaries wear. In one demonstration, a prototype was able to pierce a punching bag covered with aircraft aluminium and a ballistic vest. Also, the handle is more oval than round to prevent repetitive-stress injuries during training.

In United States Marine Corps drill and ceremonies, the command "FIX... BAYONETS!" is executed in four movements from the order arms position. In the United States Army, the movement is also executed from order arms; there are no specified movements, but the bayonet is to be attached quickly and quietly.

I have no disagreement with you there. Not supplying bayonettes is a sheer lunacy! However, IDF carries knives, no? Almost all military knives can be used as bayonettes. Why not IDF's? What brand of knives does IDF issue?

If security for the Israeli Chief of Staff is so abysmal http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1107867.html
little wonder that the CIA rates the IDF as "a shower and a shambles"!

You'll probably find that half-Syrian and half-Bulgarian Gabi Ashkenazi has as much IQ and knowledge of military tactics as an Afula felafel vendor!

Like most Israeli Ramatkals, he was probably a semi-competent officer up to the rank of brigadier (aluf-mishne). But that he has now been over-promoted beyond his Peter Principle. Ramatkals in Israel are political appointees, deliberately chosen to be none-too-smart weak-willed, compliant liberals or leftist shlemazels, shlemiels, shmocks or shmendriks, but with huge misplacedly over-confident Israeli egos.
