What is your favorite Shabbat Song?
« on: August 16, 2009, 04:43:32 AM »
Mine is Tzur Mishelo Achalnu.

By Rabbi Haggai Batzri

Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help (Psalms 146:3)

They are all great, including that one, but my favorite is probably Yom Zeh Mechubad. But it's close.

My favorite Shabbat song is Kol Ha'Olam Kulu...

We sang it at the Shabbaton I attended two weeks ago. My Rabbi knows it is my favorite so when he asked what song we should sing I volunteered this song.

http://www.aish.com/sh/s/48969621.html

This song is from the saying of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev.
You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities
Duet 16:13-14

I ain't gonna work on Saturday. I think there is also a version of it in Hebrew.
Does it bother you that you have to face the dome and the rock to say the sh'ma?

That's indeed a great song. BTW, its last words "lo lefahed klal" ("to have no fear at all") were chosen to be a slogan of the National Union party.

Actually Lchad Dodi is. It is the song that welcomes Shabbat. It is supposed to be a joyous one where everyone dances around the beema after telling shabbat to come.
Yedid Nefesh is also a great one that is supposed to start the Mariv services.
I hate when congregations skip Yedid Nefesh and then quickly blow through LChad Dodi like it is not important.

Adon Olam is pretty good.  I always have that one running through my head.
Wow,

About a week ago I had a thing about Adon Olam... I downloaded six different versions... There are so many great melodies for Adon Olam!

Adon Olam (Master of the World)

The Master of the World reigned before anything was created,

From the moment that all was created according to His desire, it was then that He was called the King,

And after all everything ceases to exist He will still reign alone,

He was, He is and He will be in all glory, 1

He is one and there is no other, none compare to him.

He has no beginnings and no end, all power and dominion is His,

He is my G-d, my life and redeemer, my fortress in times of distress,

He is my aid and in Him is my refuge and my portion on the day that I call,

Into His hand I entrust my soul when I lie down to sleep and when I awake,

And with my spirit in my body, G-d is with me, I shall not fear.

Mumann you are old school. You belong in Tzefat. I can see you there - - - all mystical/kaballistic. You remind of a few people I know who are very spiritual. I bet you like to have a kumzits.

My favorite Jewish song is yigdal. It's not specifically a shabbat song, but it's nice to sing it on shabbat.

Truthfully I have looked at property in Tzfat... When I make aliyah that is where I think I will settle.

Here's some audio of Adon Olam.  I like this melody, although it's not the one we sing at shul here:

Ive heard this melody at my Rabbis Shabbat table before.

"Dror Yikra" is the deal when it comes to Shabbat songs.   Sefardi pronunciation and tune.   Incomparable.

Even the lyrics are great.  It's kind of nationalistic.

Yes it's one of those songs that starts out slowly but gets better as it goes along.

Yes, it's a great song. Another one of this kind is "Nagila Haleluya". I would say it is even more nationalistic :)

I wouldn't translate this song I'm not a native English speaker. In short, it asks the Almighty G-d to banish the enemies, to bring the Jews back and to send them Mashiach.

Here's Adon Olam by Uzi Chitman Z"L (This is the prevailing version in Israel):

And Here's Lecha Dodi witht the music composed by Rabbi Karlibach Z"L: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7757201564580720965&ei=QgSLStihF8OG-QaX66mmDw&q=לך+דודי&hl=en

This is Psalm 121 composed by Josef Kardoner and turned into a huge cover hit.

I can't find the correct version of Lecha Dodi on youtube. I do have it on the Shabbat companion CD though. I know I'm stuck up with this one, but I believe that the Chabad version is the correct one.
