BERLIN (JTA) -- Two new German submarines were delivered to Israel.

The submarines, ordered in 2005, reportedly can launch cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads, according to the French news agency AFP.

An Israeli military spokesman, speaking off the record, confirmed the delivery of the two Dolphin-class submarines, known as U212s. The range of the missiles the subs can carry would extend at least as far as Iran, whose controversial nuclear program coupled with verbal threats against the Jewish state have raised alarm.

Israel reportedly now has five submarines from Germany, which donated the first two subs to Israel after the 1991 Gulf War. The two countries split the cost of the third sub.

In a recent military exercise, an Israeli submarine entered the Suez Canal for the first time, accompanied by an Egyptian naval escort.

Great stuff! I fully support military and economic cooperation with Germany. I am sure that these subs are the best in the world in their class.

I am not certain what does it mean that our sub was "accompanied" by Egyptian Navy. Were Egyptian destroyers trailing Israeli sub or was it a joint military exercises?  How can a reporter be so dumb to write "accompanied"?

BTW, I am not certain what does it mean "accompanied" by Egyptian Navy. Was Egyptian destroyer trailing Israeli sub or was it a joint military exercises? 

I  think it was a signal that Egypt supports Israel against Iran as long as Israel does the fighting

Seriously, Germany is the best partner Israel has in Europe and Germany is going to make more money on the 2nd sub anyway - maintenance, support, upgrades, training, etc.

I think it was "accompanied" in the way that it was observed to not get out of it's trail.

From an old report I read, the German Government payed for 1/3 of the price for the two Subs, although Schroeder at first tried to torpedo the deal.

A friend who has a big heating engineering  company told me, that he has never earned so much money through gouvernment subsidies like under the Schröder gouvernment.

Well, I should not complain about him making politics for the rich. There has to be made politics for ALL parts of the society. But what he did was dismantling the social system and worsening the situation of the worst-off in the society and overloading the workers' class with unbearable taxes! And such aperson calls himself a "friend of the worker".

I thought gouvernment paid half of the ammount. But I could be mistaken, because I read this article years ago.

You are right. First he didn't want to even sell Israel the submarines.

You are completely wrong! The conservative and the FDP as well as most of the small parties are more pro-Israel than pro-Muslim. Neither is Anglea Merkel pro-Muslim nor is anyone of the new elected government. Al-Qaida even threatened Germans in a video with terror in case of an election of the conservatives...
