Maybe if we are REALLY lucky he will get life without parole. But certainly nobody will put two and two together that he killed these people because they are white.

Stanton - A 38-year-old Garden Grove man was booked today on suspicion of killing a man and woman in a Stanton mobile home sales office nearly nine months ago.

Hilbert Pinell Thomas was arrested at his home about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, said Orange County Sheriff's Department Investigator Joe Gaul.

Thomas was booked on suspicion of two counts of murder and possession of stolen property about 2 a.m. after investigators questioned him, Gaul said.

The arrest comes a day after Orange County sheriff's investigators recovered the car of one of the victims, 49-year-old Elizabeth Ann Palmer of Fountain Valley, who was found shot to death on Feb. 2, along with Matthew Francis Scott.

Golden Sun Homes owner Don Scott found his 42-year-old son and his longtime secretary shot to death in the company's offices at 12331 Beach Blvd.

Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens praised Gaul for not giving up on the case. He ran out of leads a few weeks ago, so he sent out a bulletin to area law enforcement agencies reminding them about Palmer's missing car.

They received a big break this week when an Anaheim police officer spotted the 2004 Lexus GS300 in the parking lot of the El Dorado Inn, 3360 W. Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim. Sheriff's investigators staked it out, hoping someone would try to drive it, according to sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

When no one did, sheriff's deputies had the vehicle towed to the county's forensics lab on Wednesday so it could be examined for evidence.

Gaul credited the arrest to evidence collected from the car and to the tips investigators received when they canvassed the motel. Some residents there said they saw Thomas driving the car, Gaul said.

The car's driver removed the license plates and put a temporary paper plate on the back of the sedan, Amormino said. It could not be sold because authorities had the vehicle identification number flagged, Amormino noted.

Hutchens and Gaul declined to comment on what evidence has been collected, but they are convinced Thomas is the killer.

"He's a cold-blooded indiscriminate killer," Hutchens said. "We're happy to say he is in custody."

As for the motive, "there are a couple of theories we're working on, but we have not pinpointed one," Gaul said.

Elizabeth Palmer's husband, Richard, and her daughter, Linda, said they were pleased someone was arrested in the case.

"I'm just glad they got this guy," Richard Palmer said. "We've been waiting months for this and it's been a real nail biter."

If the killer just wanted the car all they had to do was ask for it, Richard Palmer said.

"She would have given him the keys," Richard Palmer said. "I can't see two people (getting killed) over a lousy car. It doesn't make any sense."
