'Moderate' Republican backs Democratic opponent‏

ALBANY, NY - A day after Republican state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava abruptly suspended her campaign in the New York special election, she's endorsing the liberal Democrat in the race -- not the Conservative Party candidate favored by fellow Republicans.

Following her surprise exit in the race for the rock-solid Republican congressional seat, Scozzafava said Sunday that Democrat Bill Owens is the best of the remaining candidates to build on the legacy of the previous holder of the 23rd Congressional District seat -- Republican John McHugh, who has taken a position in the Obama administration.

A recent Siena College poll showed Scozzafava finishing a distant third behind Owens and Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. Her decision to back Owens is raising eyebrows and questions about GOP unity because fellow Republicans had favored Hoffman.

Hoffman drew endorsements from former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and other prominent Republicans.

What does Scozzafava's withdrawal from the special congressional election

tell you about the Republican Party in that district?

Party unity?
The day after Scozzafava suspended her campaign, GOP leadership took to the airways to insist the party is strong and inclusive. Speaking on CNN's State of the Union, House Republican leader John Boehner, who had made a campaign contribution to Scozzafava's campaign, says the GOP wants moderates in the party and calls Tuesday's special election an unusual situation. But Democrats are describing a Republican party out of touch with the people.

Scozzafava failed to connect with voters, party officials or, perhaps most important, campaign donors, largely because of her support for abortion rights, same-sex "marriage," and union rights. That opened the door to Hoffman and Owens.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden is campaigning for Owens in a special congressional election that has suddenly become a referendum on the Republican Party -- and President Barack Obama attended a fundraiser in New York City for him last month.

There wasn't a primary.  Hoffman should have been introduced much earlier on the scene.  Scuzzofuva was still on the ballot and took 5% of the vote away from Hoffman.   The New Jersey and Virginia wins by Republicans should be a megaphone to the Democratic party on their lousy bills, and changes for America!
