Is there a virus on the forum?
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:58:54 PM »
Sometimes a thing pops up asking me to save or browse or something. I click cancel. Also, when I click on a topic the screen turns into a white thing with all these crazy letters on it. I click back, but it happened already 3 times.

I have not witnessed any abnormal behavior in the operation of the forum... Maybe you should run a virus check on your machine...

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

AVG is free

Maybe you should try that program. It doesn't catch everything but it helps a lot.

It sounds like your computer is infected with a trojan, Get Trojan Guarder Gold and run it, it will find the infection and remove it. Here's the link to the trial version, it will work for 2 weeks then ask you to buy it, just use it to get rid of the infection then uninstall it. http://download.cnet.com/Trojan-Guarder-Gold/3000-2239_4-10165573.html?tag=mncol

To keep from being re-infected, I highly recommend avast antivirus, you can get it here, and it is free. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

By the way, I'm a computer network engineer, so I am a very educated opinion on this subject.  ^-^

Im running Ubuntu linux and there are not many viruses for Linux. In my 10 years of running Linux I have never gotten any malware or viruses installed on my machine. I am a Linux evangelist and only run my Windows in a Virtual Machine running within my Linux environment. This was I can easily back up the virtual drives and only run the Windows when I need to access something which can only be run in windows.

9.10 just got released, but I'm sure you already knew that.

I'd switch to linux but I like my pc games too much to give them up.  ;D

That was due to somebodies signature line which attempted to load an image from some site which required authentication... I could probably find out what that URL was {because at the time I assisted in determining the cause of the problem}... That problem was due to some image server asking for authentication... I dont think what you saw was related to that issue {we all saw that happen when it happened}...

But its good to know we have computer experts here. So if I have a problem I can contact one of u

I had a horrible virus a few weeks ago. My buddy, a computer whizz, deleted my hard drive and installed a new one. It's ok now, I guess.

Hey Moe wooohooo nyuk nyuk

That's not a virus. The pop-up comes from unchecked ads.
Without looking at your computer, I'd guess its a fake anti-virus or fake free software download.
When you see something like that, fear not. The only solution at that point it not to click cancel but to kill the browser itself. No need to pull the plug on your computer or hit the power switch.

To kill the browser open up taskmgr.exe the task manager either from the start button or [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DEL] and select task manager.
Look for iexplorer.exe or firefox.exe and end it.
You will lose everything you didn't save.
If you're running Linux, you should already know what to do with /bin/kill.

Wait a minute. JTF doesn't have ads.
What where you clicking on? Are you sure it was JTF forum?
Did you have other windows opened? Did you have two Internet Explorers or two firefoxes opened?
What did you look at before opening up jtf forum?
It may be coming from a pop under that you didn't see from previous pages you were looking at.
And on the forum, you really can't hide any scripts by posting.

It's too much work to make a note of the PID.

ps -ef|grep firefox|grep -v "grep"|perl -e 's/\S+\s+(\S+).+\n/$1/' -p|xargs kill

Of course, you don't want to murder an instance of firefox which do not belong to you so:

ps -ef|grep muman613|grep firefox|grep -v "grep"|perl -e 's/\S+\s+(\S+).+\n/$1/' -p|xargs kill -9
