Self Defense: Would JFK Tell Israel No? »By Rabbi Yaakov SpivakThe horrifying news came off the wire like a lightning bolt: Hamas in Gaza now has rockets capable of reaching the civilian population in Tel Aviv.
The rockets were supplied by Iran, using Syria as a middleman.
If Israel ever had to act it is now.
This Jewish country has a mandate to step in immediately to prevent the perpetration of a Gotterdammerung upon a nation of Holocaust survivors and their families.
To do nothing is to commit a crime.
We in America, as well as people all over the world, should rise up in protest as bloodthirsty terrorists prepare another Holocaust.
The truth is, Washington will be silent, London will say nothing, and there will be no reaction from Paris, Moscow or Rome. After all, it’s only Israel, only the Jews.
Can you imagine if this had happened to another country?
It did. It happened to America in 1962 when the Soviet Union began sending missiles to Cuba that were capable of reaching major population centers in the US.
President John F. Kennedy, invoking the Monroe Doctrine, blockaded Cuba, daring the Soviets to send any more missiles to Castro, and demanding that all existing missile sites be dismantled and shipped out of the country.
It was a dangerous move, one that could have provoked war, but it had to be done. In the “eyeball to eyeball” confrontation, the Soviets blinked and backed down. The ships turned around and the missile sites were dismantled.
If he didn’t want to be a hypocrite, there is no doubt what Kennedy, had he lived, would tell Israel now: You can’t let a bunch of international criminals bombard your civilian population with rockets. Go after them now. Blockade Gaza. If that doesn’t work, go after the middleman Syria. And if that fails, go after Iran the way you went after Iraq.
The rest of the world has the right to protect its citizenry; that right cannot be denied to Israel.
Incidentally, Obama fancies himself as a 21st Century JFK. Now is his chance to prove it.
