Does anybody like trains?
« on: November 24, 2009, 04:28:28 PM »
It's not really a hobby (yet) but I was learning about the Industrial Revolution and came across the steam engine, railroads, and steam ships etc. I couldn't help but become fascinated with trains. Does anybody else think about trains like that or am I the only one? Planes are cool, too, but trains are cooler.

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

Yes.  I really dig all forms of transportation from the 20s and 30s.

I'm going across country in a month or two, and instead of taking a plane which'll take like three hours, I've decided to take AMTRAK which will take about 4 days. It's about the same price.

Why would you take the longer route?

Wow! I could never do that because I'd go crazy, but I love the idea. I would do that only if I could sit with the conductor and call out stops etc.

I wish I could get one, too. I'm thinking of building a train set though.

Well, I've flown a couple times, and driven across a couple times, so I want to try the train at least once. I love trains as well.

Yeah, I am a bit worried about going crazy. I could get one of those little coffin-beds to sleep in, but it's double the price. So I'm just gonna buck up and sleep in my seat. It's only 4 days. Unfortunately though AMTRAK is all electric so it doesn't have the romance of one of those old diesel trains.

I actually have a Lionel train set lying around in my closet somewhere. Lionel is probably the best company. For some reason I know Neil Young owns a lot of stock in that company. But if I was going to buy one, I would get the Johnny Cash express:

Yeah, I might bring it out for the holidays. It adds a little festive cheer.

As far as I know, they don't have showers. That was another concern of mine. :o
